Visiting CA. Nobelius & Gembrook Nurseries in Emerald is not just about exploring beautiful landscapes and rich horticultural history—it’s also an opportunity to experience one of Victoria’s most iconic railway journeys! The Legacy of CA. Nobelius & Gembrook Nurseries Founded by Carl Axel Nobelius in the late 1800s, the Gembrook Nurseries supplied millions of trees and plants across Australia and internationally. Though the nursery itself is no longer active, its history is preserved at Nobelius Heritage Park, where visitors can walk among towering trees that were once part of this thriving enterprise. The Nobelius Heritage Museum offers a fascinating look into the nursery’s past, displaying historic tools, photographs, and documents that tell the story of how Emerald became a major horticultural hub. Puffing Billy Railway – A Scenic and Historic Ride One of the most magical ways to experience this area is by taking a ride on the Puffing Billy Railway, one of the world’s best-preserved steam railways. Originally built in 1900 to serve local farmers and nurseries—including CA. Nobelius’ operation—this charming steam train still runs today, offering a nostalgic journey through the stunning Dandenong Ranges. The train travels through lush forests, rolling hills, and historic railway stations, making stops at places like: • Emerald Station – Near Nobelius Heritage Park, this is a great place to explore the nursery’s history before hopping back on the train. • Lakeside – Home to a picturesque lake and a perfect spot for a picnic. • Gembrook – The final stop, a charming small town with cafes and scenic walking trails. Passengers can even dangle their legs over the side of the open carriages (a Puffing Billy tradition!) while enjoying the fresh mountain air and breathtaking views. A visit to Nobelius Heritage Park, combined with a ride on the Puffing Billy Railway, makes for a perfect day trip. Whether you’re a history lover, a nature enthusiast, or just looking for a relaxing and scenic adventure, this experience offers a beautiful mix of heritage and nature.

Named after Carl Nobelius who founded the nursery in 1851 & was operated by the family for 70 years. Has been preserved & converted into parkland with the original plantings & trees. Especially lovely in autumn! The Emerald Museum is located here (open on weekends). Puffing Billy stops here enroute to Emerald Lake - platform is at Nobelius Nursery building. Walking trails connect to Emerald Lake (hardly 2 kms away). Parking & toilets further down Crichton Rd. You can navigate pram & wheelchair but note - area is on a downward slope - so be prepared!

Grew up near here has changed alot use to be very over grown which made it much more fun as kids to play in. One shelter, one museum & the packing shed up the top of the hill. Could do with better bbq facilities, a public toilet block & more public shelter areas to make it more family friendly, but I think the best part is the free parking and walking into the Emerald Lake Park...
