This is BIG. Werribee Open Range Zoo just dropped one of their biggest upgrades ever — and we were blown away by how good it is! The Elephant Trail is officially open, and it’s so much more than just a pretty path. Think: camels, nyalas, ostriches, zebras and more — all without needing to hop on the safari truck. It’s a huge win for families too: ✔️ A full hour-long trail (great to get your steps in for the day) ✔️ Gorgeous new viewing spots — including some very up-close elephant moments ✔️ Loads of shady nature play stops ✔️ Brand new café with heaps of seating and room for picnics ✔️ Plenty of space to take a breather And the best part? This move is incredible for the elephants’ wellbeing. They’ve now got more space to roam, more enrichment, and let’s be honest… they look SO happy. If you’ve got little animal lovers at home — this is your sign to go! 📍 Werribee Open Range Zoo, K Rd, Werribee South VIC 3030 Open every day from 9am–5pm Hot tip: the trail opened today at 9.45am. Arrive at opening time so you can see the elephants roam over the bridges from their stables to the enclosures. @Zoos Victoria #melbournewithkids #werribeezoo #elephanttrail #melbournefamilyfun #melbournezoo #werribeeopenrangezoo #thingstodoinmelbourne #schoolholidayfun #melbournemums #kidsactivitiesmelbourne #zooexperience #elephantencounter #animaladventuresmelbourneparents

Werribee Zoo is absolutely fantastic. There's so much space to let the animals roam, and so many different kinds of enrichment available for them. Every single staff member that we've interacted with at our numerous visits has been so obviously passionate, knowledgeable and kind to every animal - from the informative and engaging keeper talks to the way that they stop to say hi to the little willy wagtail birds that flit all over the zoo. And the people working at the ticket booths, cafes and in the zoo shop have always been lovely and helpful, too. Being able to sit at the Meerkat Cafe and watch the meerkats on one side and the gorillas on the other (depending on crowds) while eating lunch or drinking a coffee is great. The food and drink prices are steep, but they're good quality and a decent size. I do recommend bringing your own food and drinks from home, though, to save some money and to avoid having to wait in lines. The safari tour is an absolute highlight of every visit. You can see so many amazing animals, and a lot of the guides add hilarious puns and jokes to their informative spiels. Michael was the tour guide on our latest visit and had our whole bus cracking up (which is a particular feat, as one carriage was full of a group visiting from a retirement village and another carriage was full of children visiting from a kindergarten, on top of the usual mix of general public). My mum said he was "the best tour guide we've ever had." There's plenty of little play spaces to keep kids engaged all over the zoo; there's multiple rope and 'obstacle' courses, little winding side paths through greenery that run alongside the main walking paths, 'ant hills' to climb over, sandpits and there's even a little water play pad section near the hippos. There's a model boat viewing platform at the hippos, too, and a model safari Jeep viewing platform at the lions, as well interactive cameras, speakers and so many little things to look at at the other enclosures and along the paths. There's also a little maze which explores how domestic cats are much safer when kept inside and not allowed to roam freely, which is a fun detour as well as having an important message. Definitely go in the morning if you want to catch the keeper talks, and go on a weekday during school terms if you can. The walkways are spacious and there's plenty of places to get food and sit and eat during the peak times, but the windows and viewing platforms for the enclosures can get crowded during weekends and school holidays. Not to the point where you won't be able to see anything though - if you can only go on a peak day, definitely still go! - you might just have to wait a bit to get to the front. The elephant enclosure is due to open in a few months, and is going to be incredible. We'll absolutely be coming back to see it once it's finished and the elephants have moved to their new home!

Visiting the zoo, unplanned on a Saturday, I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful gardens, clean atmosphere and of the absence of animal droppings. We arrived around lunch time, to an extremely busy Werribee Zoo to find the staff at the entry working like busy bees in their re-purposed zoo truck. The queue moving quickly, we entered the zoo, the grounds have been transformed since we had been there last (some 5 years ago). The map clearly shows what to look out for, and is easy to navigate. The walking part of the zoo is not huge and can easily be done in a day, unlike Melbourne zoo, where you would be unlikely to see everything properly in one visit. The animals were all clearly visible, well looked after, and their enclosures very clean and tidy. The zoo was very busy, yet there seemed to be room for everybody at the viewing windows. The lions were a big hit with one female deciding to lie across the bonnet of the car for some time. Hippos were out, enjoying the April sun and the huge silver-back was a sight. On to the bus, and it again was busy, but queues moving quickly. We got up close to the savannah animals and were able to take great photos. The driver was witty and engaging, and we were able to see the young antelope drinking from its mum. The cost of entry was fair for the amount of work put into keeping the zoo clean, tidy and animals in excellent condition. Plenty of amenities and places for a bite to eat. We saw the dino exhibition and it was actually really good, life like and almost beleiveable. I would definately go back, next year, when the elephants from Melbourne zoo will join the Werribee zoo. Staff were pleasant and accommodating.

If you seriously want a taste of Africa, and go on a safari to experience the African savannah wild life or just a great day out - then jump in your car and drive the 30 minutes from the Melbourne CBD to the Werribee Open Range Zoo. If you're just a local or a visitor to Melbourne, then this is a MUST for an out of this World Adventure experience! Why would you pay around $3,600 for an airfare to Africa, and take the 22 hour flight plus tour costs for a safari experience, when you can just about see everything and experience everything at the Werribee Open Range Zoo. You'll pay around $46.00 for an adult admission, and cheaper for concession card holders/pensioners and children for entry, and we suggest you book on line to avoid disappointment. Upon entry, suggest you then jump on the FREE safari adventure bus and listen to the wonderful commentary to experience the African savannah and everything it offers - and this is what makes this Zoo so special, and so different from other Zoo's. Some of the animals you'll see at the Zoo in there natural habitat include - giraffe's, zebra's, rhino's, hippo's, lions, gorillas, African wild dog's, meerkats, various antelopes and deer, bison, snake's, wild horses, ostriches, koala's, and bird life. And there's ample FREE car parking, plenty of clean facilities to use throughout your day, and a snack bar and restaurant for food and drink's. Truly, this was an experience to remember forever - Very Highly recommended 👏👍😊

Fantastic experience especially the open bus safari tour. We all had fun and without the safari bus tour i dont think this zoo will be worth the visit. The self guided tour doesnt really offer a wow experience for most visiting spots. At 3pm the cafes were already closed except for the main one at the entrance . The animals were getting fewer compared to our last visit. We only saw one Cheetah , there was only one monkey that apparently hid somewhere for so long that the kids cant see. At least there were 5 lions which was great. The hippos werent around and one of the guests told us that its feeding time, we waited for 15mins but still wasnt there. Wish theres an info available so we can come back. We ddnt know what was going on. There werent african wild dogs visible too and wallabys. We also did not see any gorilla. The reptile spot was already closed around 350pm. There should be expectations set at least for the guests, more than anything the kids are expecting to see these listed animals. If the zoo is closed at 5, at least the cafes and animal shows should still be available up to 4 or 430pm. Or maybe make it visible in the website that other cafes arent open on Sunday or certain times. There werent any show at all from 2pm or maybe we were in the wrong spot but for those who get to visit only from 2pm this should be advised at the counter. Hopefully improvement will be considered as this zoo still has a potential.
