The four of us spontaneously drove to Pooles Rock Winery from Newcastle for a quick wine tasting service last Sunday. We didn't have a booking and thought we'd try our luck before heading to our pre-arranged premium booking at Audrey Wilkinson. All we can say is WOW! The service we received from Ally was incredible. Not only were they kind, educational and attentive but they also explained the history and origin behind each of the wines. They also managed to explain the science behind wine making which was incredibly interesting (who knew there's so chemistry involved) It was a pleasure to hear their passion and understanding of each wine. On the topics of wine, the wines were to die for, offering a varied selection for everyone's palette; we chose the red wine service. The private room to the left was where we were seated which had a cosy fit-out (fireplace, couch and bar) adjacent to the beautiful dam/pond view. It truly was a privilege to be serviced by Ally and to have been treated with such care even without a booking! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and most certainly will be back soon. Of course I walked away with a bottle of the Liqueur Shiraz 2019, It'd be a crime not to really... Ally is a true asset and made our overall experience...

What a find was Pooles Rock. This was one of the most sensational tasting experiences I have ever had. We were referred to Pooles Rock by Kat at Audrey Wilkinson where we also had an excellent tasting. The premium wines at Pooles Rock were a sensory delight as good as any I have experienced in Australia but what made the visit so memorable was Lana. At her tender young age her knowledge of wines was amazing. It was an absolute pleasure to spend time with her presenting exceptional wines. i understand that she has only been in the job seven weeks but her in-depth knowledge and passion for Pooles Rock totally blew us away. The plans she has, to make visits to the winery more educational, sound so exciting that we will make sure that we return from Queensland to be part of this.

If you wish to experience what we have I can confidently recommend that you give Lana a call and book a tasting. You won’t regret it.

To Pooles Rock management… congratulations on bringing Lana...

Not a great experience here, after going to atleast a dozen wineries over the weekend. Didnt check the cost of the tastings...big mistake! Double the price of other wineries and really not that great wine. Not sure what the "experience" was meant to be as it was no different to any other winery and we went through the wines in less then 30 minutes. There were a couple of high end shiraz that I might of bought at $70 odd plus, if they discounted the tastings... but nope only if you buy a dozen... walked away never to return. I understand the need to charge for tastings but some places are just going overboard atleast half the cost if the customer...

The standout venue in a day of Hunter valley wine tastings. Pooles Rock is situated in a stunning little vineyard with sweeping views and a great balcony that takes full advantage of them. We did a tasting with the wonderful Allie - she was knowledgeable, friendly, funny and did an awesome job at describing the processes and differentiation of the wines and subtleties. Thank you Allie! We didn’t get to try their food but the wines were consistently great and will definitely keep an eye out for them when I’m next in a bottle shop. Worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Part of the Agnew portfolio that also includes Audrey Wilkerson (same winemaker). But the difference between Audrey and Pooles is stark. The Chardonnay and Semillon are much better. Also less noisy smaller setting allows for better conversation for wine aficionados who want to learn and improve their experience and understanding of wines versus drinking quick to get drunk. In particular- need to give a shoutout to super fellow “wine nerd” Larna. She was great especially explaining why my guess on the age of the Semillon was not in the 6 to 8 year old range.
