We saw this on TV whilst travelling in the area. Had to have a ride and booked our tickets a week and a half ahead. Glad we did the train was full on the day, so book in advance. The railway station is beautiful, has a small museum and a gift shop with rather a good selection of goods for you to buy. The staff are all very informative and friendly. The carriages are all very well maintained, the only thing that was a bit disappointing was the seating is along the carriage rather than across so you could have a window seat. Bit that was quickly forgotten when the steam engine made it's way to the station to couple up with the carriages. The journey from Quorn to Woolshed Flat was most enjoyable watching the scenery go by, there were some very close rock formations and a very narrow bridge. But it was interesting all the way. At woodshed Flat there was the opportunity to purchase hot pasties and sausage rolls, scones, jam and cream, plus tea and coffee. The return journey gave those at the front of the train the opportunity to be at the back and get those perfect train photos. All up a great way to spend a day. Don't forget to allow some time to explore Quorn and...
Read moreLovely day out. We left from Port Augusta station on The Ghan (Afghan Express) in time. The locomotive was beautifully restored and crafted down to the way each nail is screwed in each carriage. It was great spring weather, with friendly visitors. Lots of opportunities for taking pictures of the ancient landscape, kangaroos skipping about the green South Australian flood plains, the beautiful mountains and of the flowers in bloom. Several train enthusiasts following the train's progress through to the quaint little historic town of Quorn. The train spotters were taking many pictures of the train like true paparazzi! We had 2 hrs to kill in Quorn. We had lunch in a charming tea house (Teas on the Terrace), of pasties and sausage rolls, sweet and savoury light scones with jam and cream, followed by cheesecake and bread and butter pudding with ice cream. The volunteer guide in the carriage was friendly and informative....
Read moreAmazing experience, Lady was so nice on our carriage, amazing service from staff and the drivers went into the cab of the loco, it was beautiful clean well looked after locomotive. after the train ride the nice kind lady offered us a tour of the depot, I would have loved to go inside but just didn't have the time (personal issue not the trains fault)
Only thing I recommend is when booking as if you have aged people going on the train as some carriages face inwards and especially for old people its hard to turn around and look, my grandfather is a train enthusiast same with me and was very hard to look out the windows.
every locomotive is well looked after, W 933 W 934 W22 Yx141 NJAB #1/Coffee Pot, NM25, T186 (despite running, also known as big ben I think) Brill railcar 219, 301, 302, NSU 51, NT76 and last but not least NB 30 (Steam Locomotive turned Diesel)
