Having spent a few days in dinosaur country, we’ve wandered through several museums and goggled over numerous fossils. But I’m glad we left this one til last. The others would have paled in comparison. From the brilliantly constructed movie to introduce us to what we were about to see, to the magnificent treasure in the third room, we were completely entranced. (No spoilers ... so no alert needed! Nothing further will be said about the third room, and no revealing photos!) 😉 My partner has terrible hearing but even without subtitles he caught the majority of the narrative. And the little hand-held PDAs could be held tight against the ear so he didn’t miss a thing. Every exhibit was shown in a way that brought the magnificent animals to life. So much thought has gone into it. Loved every minute. And that’s not just my geeky side talking. There’s something for everyone. The girl at the counter was extremely knowledgeable, and any questions we had were answered confidently. She even managed to identify the teeny bits of history we found at the free fossicking site just out of town. We didn’t get our pictures up on the Wall Of Fame, but we were pretty happy with our fish scales, shells and a clam. (Easily pleased I guess!) This is primarily a fossil museum. There are lots of specimens, and they seem to be laid out from underwhelming ones at the start (hard to distinguish fossil from rock, not particularly well prepared or specimen too degraded to make preparation possible), through to the masterpiece in the Rob Ievers gallery: the spectacular most complete Kronosaurus specimen in the world, in a climate controlled sealed display.
There is plenty of info against all the displays, so if you enjoy a self guided museum visit and soaking in all the detail, then this one will be great for you. Personally, though there were less fossils on display, I much preferred Age of Dinosaurs at Winton, because it was much more story-driven, and our guides were fantastic. But it all depends on what you're excited by. The volume of specimens at KK was great - makes up a solid part of the overall Australian...
