I never write reviews, but it felt necessary to write my first one after the disappointing morning we had at the Big pineapple. I do disability support work. My client asked to go ride the train around the big pineapple today.
We walked up to the front register and asked for two tickets for the train. My client went to get her companion card out, but the lady would not let her use it (if you are a support worker, you would know that pretty much everywhere allows companion cards, so I queried why she could not use hers here). As I did, there was another two support workers who were standing there and also wanted to know why companion cards were not accepted. They both had groups of clients that they brought a long way to go on the train. The lady was short with us and had a serious lack of empathy for the situation. She said we should drive down to wildlife HQ and pay for a zoo pass and then drive back to big pineapple and they would let us use the companion card. This seemed ridiculous! My client had a budget for the day, all she wanted to do was ride the train for $10 and they were trying to get her to pay for the whole zoo ($42 extra) if she wanted to use her companion card. The fact that we would have had to pay $42 on top of the $10, and drive all the way down to wildlife HQ and back before they even looked at the companion card was in my opinion extremely unnecessary and inconsiderate towards differently abled people, especially if they have troubles with mobility, or a money budget.
After trying to explain our scenario and being turned away with no empathy. I overheard the staff talking negatively and mocking me and the other two support workers queries.
On top of that after being turned away, my client wanted to look inside the big pineapple and it was closed so you could not climb inside.
If you are a support worker with a client, I absolutely do not recommend The Big Pineapple. They are not accomodating to different needs and the staff today were inconsiderate and showed a serious lack of empathy. All around very...
Read moreHave you ever had someone tell you about an attraction from their childhood only to find out that their nostalgia may have been fueled by their youthful innocence? Well, such was the case for the Big Pineapple. My partner told me that on their trips to Brissy from Rocky, her Dad would often stop at the Big Pineapple, where they would ride the train, see the animals, and eat numerous yummy foods and pineapple desserts. So... let's tackle those in order: 1) we did not ride the train because the short ride was $10/person. 2) we did not visit the zoo because the tickets were $42/person. You could save $5 with the combo ticket at $47/person, but this is pretty steep for a highway adjacent attraction. I should also admit that my son is not a toddler and probably aged out of this type of place being fun or entertaining for him about 5 or so years ago. There were many families getting tickets to enter and explore, and nearly all of them had kids under 7 years of age. If your kids are getting restless from a long car ride, this may be an ideal pit stop. 3) The food available at the cafe was pricey for what was on offer. The cafeteria is not yet open, so it is possible that additional fare may be available on the upcoming menu. If you are interested in climbing to the top of the pineapple, that too is $10/ person. In days long past, many of these activities were free. However, considerable money was likely spent to renovate/rehab these facilities, and the owners need to get a return on their investment. However, if you don't want to pay these high prices or if you don't have young ones, you can stretch your legs, eat a snack and the picnic tables near the front, and take as many photos as you'd like all...
