There are a couple different ways to hike up to Crater Lake within the Cradle Mountain National Park. We chose to start at Ronny Creek, hiking up to Crater Lake then onward to Marion's Lookout, before returning to the lake for a hike down to Dove Lake where we ended our trek. You can do this trail in reverse as well, starting at Dove Lake and ending at Ronny Creek.
The park shuttle service makes drop-off/pick-up at both Ronny Creek and Dove Lake. The track is moderately challenging with a fair bit of climbing and includes outstanding views throughout. We completed the track during April when the Fagus trees were changing colours, making for a beautiful autumn scene, particularly around Crater Lake. Would gladly repeat this particular hike the next time visiting Cradle Mountain National Park regardless of season.
Note: There are toilets at the main Visitor Centre and Dove Lake but not at Ronny Creak. As such, we'd suggest starting from Ronny Creek and ending at Dove Creek. There is also water refill stations at Dove Creek as well. Best to allow around 3 hours to complete this trail, possibly more if you want to enjoy a light packed lunch somewhere...

The Overland Track is via Crater Falls. The other walk passes by Lake Lilla and Wombat Pool. Crater Lake is a beautiful glacier lake surrounded by 200 metre high cliffs. It is suggested you allow about 3 hours to complete the return/circular walk. The prize is definitely...
