I had just finished a run over some of the trails on Mt Wellington and I came across this school group with their teachers. They looked kind of lost and so I asked them where they wanted to go. They said 'Lost Freight at The Springs". I pointed them up the trail to take and off they went. It appeared that they had heard about The Springs, and the cafe there "Lost Freight" and they were willing to walk up to get to it. The Springs is about half way up the mountain and its what you come to first. A lot of people stop here to admire the views over the city and to just get a feel for the mountain. In winter, when snow has fallen, its a great place to base yourself when you want to explore the mountain. I use The Springs as a stop point for trail running. You can park your car there, or you can just run through it. Be aware though that if your on your feet that The Springs is uphill from everywhere. Well worth a stop if your headed further uphill. Enjoy the sub-tropical rainforest for awhile. Well done to Hobart City Council for their great work of keeping it looking great. Its a big call for a local government authority to have to maintain a...
Read moreTo be honest the walk to the springs from the junction cabin, along the Lenah Valley track was the most enjoyable part as The Springs is just a car park with a cafe that was closed when I arrived and an interesting history. Seems to be a nice place to camp as there were a few guys cooking up dinner there when I arrived. Read the history on the toilet block. It did have a very nice Hotel once. Getting back to South Hobart is a lot trickier with Google sending you in a long, winding route away but I used fingerprint, then O,Grady's(have a look at the waterfall) then the rivulet. Watch the rivulet as it seems to be a bike track too (I don't know if it is only bike as I didn't see any signs) also it seems to be Cascade Brewery property but I didn't see signs until I arrived on...
Read moreA free place to walk around. It's pretty cold in winter and is nice enough. Stopped in on our way to Port Arthur. There are a few different areas you can stop off at around there and walk around. To be fair we only spent about an hour there and saw the main views. In summer it might be nice to spend half a day exploring but it's not going to be on my top 10 list of places to see in the Greater Hobart area, just a quick pop in if you happen to be driving past. Please let me know if it is worth spending more time there in summer, but battling the Hobart winter I just did a bunch of 5 minute drives from...
