Beautiful part of God’s creation with reef snorkeling right off a pristine sand beach. Our family (2 adults, 3 kids under 12yrs) visited in late September 2023. We visited Great Keppel Island for the day, taking the Keppel Konnections ferry. A moderately difficult 20 minute walk from the ferry drop-off on Fisherman’s beach. Shelving Beach is a closer walk than Long Beach or Monkey Beach (which we didn’t visit). We were thankful for wearing closed in shoes for the rocky walk, but others seemed to manage in thongs/flip-flops. Take plenty of water and some food, as it’s a decent walk to restaurants and amenities at the northern end of Fisherman’s beach. We didn’t happen to see any turtles on our visit, but plenty of reef fish. It was a warm day (29°C) and we were thankful for carrying our CoolCabana tent for added shade on the beach while resting from snorkeling.

Easy walk from the ferry drop off, or from the Holiday Village accommodation. But beware that the end of the track is steep and slippery, not suitable for anyone frail! Beautiful little sandy beach that has beginner to medium skill level snorkeling on coral reefs! The easy snorkeling is on the right hand side looking out to sea. Lots of coral and different types of rays and fish. The more difficult snorkeling is on the left hand side looking out to sea. Best about an hour before low tide, snorkel out to the far edge and ride the current all the way around to the next beach (Monkey), sit on the beach to warm up as the tide changes and catch the new current back to Shelving Beach. Be prepared to see lots of fish of all different kinds and also up to a half a dozen green turtles!

One of the greatest wonders of central Queensland is shelving beach. Approximately a 30 minute walk from where the boat drops you off. Shelving beach is a lot more sheltered than fisherman’s beach but depending on which trail you take it can be a bit steep to get down to! There’s a small amount of shade under trees and the water is crystal clear. Highly recommend as a day trip from Yeppoon while on the Capricorn coast!
