Hubby and I visited this place while in town for a couple of days. Lovely place, very well kept garden and all the animals inside looked healthy except didn't really like the cage for those Macaws and the giant Wedged Tail Eagle, their cage looked small compared to the Chimpanzees one. The tea garden was nice, the waitress was helpful and polite. I give 4 star for the zoo and the cafe but instead I give 3 stars because my husband had an accident in the toilet there. Unknown to me, apparently the MAN TOILET has a very strong spring as you open the door and it has a one step up when you enter, hubby opened the door, stepped up one leg in but he couldn't quick enough to step up in the other the door spring back at him and he fell down hit his head to the brick wall, and landed on his left hip that's still giving him pain at the moment when walking. I was waiting for him infront of the cafe. Suddenly he walked out looked shaky!! I rushed to him and he told me what happened. A lovely lady then came out of the woman toilet saying she heard my hubby fell. She said to me to watch for any vomiting, blurring vision, headache then straight to hospital. She also asked me to get some ice from the cafe to put on my hubby's head which I did ( the cafe staff was really helpful!! ) I wished I got their contact numbers!! I was shocked and panicked when it happened ( having a 75 yo hubby who won't be!! Especially when he has 2 artificial hips, falling is a BIG NO NO!! ) This incident happened on the 31 May a couple of days ago. That strong spring door should be changed! Very dangerous! Its fine if you're young but not when you're old!!!! If I know that door is that dangerous, I would hold the...
Read moreThis is a small zoo compared to what you'll find at Australia Zoo or capital city zoos but it's got a hidden treasure with the excellent chimpanzee enclosure. It's right by the excellent Rockhampton Botanical Gardens so you can easily make a day of a trip here with the kids. The zoo itself is free entry and I really recommend going to see the Chimpanzee talk which currently happens at 2:45pm. Many of the chimps have a sad story around how they got to the zoo but it's good to know they're now in a much better environment and there's some younger chimps that were born at the zoo. The zoo is quite small so you can see every enclosure at the zoo in under an hour. It's a delight to walk around in the mostly shaded zoo. We went on a Friday so it wasn't busy. As well as the chimps there's meerkats, otters, a wedge tailed eagle, a large male salt water croc, freshwater croc, kangaroos, emus, dingos, koalas, wombats and lots of birds including a big bird aviary enclosure. The zoo staff are really friendly and happy to answer questions. I really recommend leaving a gold coin donation to help the conservation efforts at the zoo and to support the awesome work if...
Read moreWhat a delightful surprise this turned out to be. It is a relatively small zoo, but it is nonetheless replete with interesting things to see and has some of the most wonderful staff working there that you could ever want to meet. The primates were a genuine delight, and the staff and the primates seemed to interact with each other very happily.
There is also the biggest and scariest saltwater crocodile I’ve ever seen in my life – about half a tonne of the monster and even just sitting there he sent a shiver down my spine.
For people from overseas there is some terrific Australian fauna to be seen, and for Australians there are some really interesting things that you wouldn’t expect to see such here as the delightful little meerkats.
It is also priced extremely generously, that is to say free. That made me feel like donating some money in any case, because this Zoo certainly is worthwhile supporting.
We spent perhaps two hours here, perhaps a little longer, and I really thought we would be in and out in 15 minutes. It really did ambush me, in the best possible way :-).
Highly recommend, especially if you have children, but even two oldies like...
