20 kilometres south of Albany on Western Australia's south coast is where you will find Misery Beach, a small, secluded and very beautiful beach perfect for swimming, snorkelling, surfing & fishing.
Misery Beach (approximately 200 metres long) is situated on Menang Noongar boodja, it's secluded beach in a protected cove. For the Menang people, the beach was a prime location for spear fishing and camping, as well as for catching kangaroos.
The beach is framed by a dramatic granite outcrops โ at the eastern end, a mammoth wall rises steeply from the ocean. Squeaky, pristine white sand and stunning clear blue waters although it has an intriguing history.
The beach was named because of the areaโs historic whaling industry: with the whaling station less than a kilometre down the coast, offal and blood would wash onto shore and stain both the water and sands red, as well as attract sharks. Thankfully, the station ceased operation in 1978, and the beach has since become a favourite for locals and visitors. The beach was also a hideaway for escaped convicts who looted ships along the south coast of WA.

There is a small carpark where you find the beach, which in the past was known for the red stains, an unfortunate result of being near the old Whaling Station just a few hundred metres west.
These days the whaling station has long ceased operating and the beach seems to have been transformed into a pristine spot with beautiful sand meeting crystal clear water. It is a gorgeous little beach, there were only two other people there when we visited recently as well. Misery Beach is a lovely spot to find for picture taking and probably a dip in the water during...
