This afternoon, I visited the town of Walhalla with the 1Step Support Group and had a BBQ lunch at the Day Visitor Area. It features an undercover BBQ area, picnic tables, seating, public toilets and information boards.

Walhalla is a very peaceful historic town in the Baw Baw Shire with a mixture of bushland vegetation and beautiful tree ferns. There is a lot of history associated with this town particularly gold mining.

Next we checked out the Walhalla Goldfields Railway station and hopped aboard the train departing at 1:30pm. The 20 minute train ride takes you to Thomson station and back to Walhalla. It moves along a windy ridge line with Stringers Creek below a steep rocky gorge.

Once we arrived at Thomson Station, we had 20 minutes to walk around and explore this gorgeous area while they turned the train around back to Walhalla.

Nearby the station is the incredible Thomson River Railway Bridge with a steep downhill track leading right down to the river bank. It's an absolutely stunning spot. If only we had more time to appreciate it.

Overall, this was a really great day out. There is obviously much more to see and explore here but that means I have a reason to...

Me and my girlfriend camped in North Gardens at Walhalla for a few days on the start of our Road Trip from Melbourne to Sydney. Walhalla is picturesque and a great place to go to disconnect from the Modern World. (No Phone Signal up here!)

The Goldfields Railway is run by a volunteer group that is based in the town and it's surrounding towns and is a real tribute to the world that once was. With the staff knowledgeable on the history of the train and it's route, guiding the participants on any questions they may have - it's a good way to learn about what this Railway was once used for and why it was crucial to the town.

If you want to ask no questions and just enjoy the view - it's worth it to. With panoramic shots of the valleys, creeks, and going over high bridges, there's plenty to look at.

There's a funny little spot along the way called Happy Creek Station that is one of the only places to get decent sunlight during the winter part of the year! Happy indeed.

Must visit -...

A friend and I came to Walhalla last weekend to go for a hike and check out the town. While looking at the railway we stopped for a chat with Tom and Andrew, two volunteers who work on the railway, and it was the highlight of our Walhalla experience. They were extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of the railway and their passion for trains and the Walhalla railway/region was plain to see. Being able to listen to their stories and knowledge really connected us to the town and gave even more depth to our experience. I really want to say thank you again to Tom and Andrew, who were polite, friendly and genuine! The railway are really lucky to have such passionate volunteers. The station and train itself are in really great condition and it's a fantastic spot to go for some regional history. I hope to...

It was a beautiful train ride, equivally enjoyable for the kids and adults. Its a scenic drive but unfortunatly on one side of the train ( Departure Left/ Arrival Right). The management for this venue needs to be more considerate as people pay for the sceneic drive , not to sit on chairs and see rocks on othe side when scenic deive is on other way. There is a need to have a seat reservation system so that either on the deprature or arrival one get to see the scenenic side. The train is quite old and had mechanical failure which caused quite some discruptions making our 3:50 train depart at 4:30+. There was a young teenage boy among the management quite rude in the way of talking and always bothering kids. Recommend online booking of tickets as it may get sold out on the long weekends ( we went for easter break)
