We’ve attempted to eat here twice. Both times there were people inside and out the building, eating and drinking. The first time the man at bar rudely told us there wasn’t any space…though there were many empty tables and it was off season.

The most recent time we took family up there was school holidays, and we had brought people who were really looking forward spending time in town. It was 2pm, and when we looked online it said the pub was open until 11pm (still does). We saw approx 4-5 families eating, but when we got to the bar the girl just said, “kitchens closed”. I explained online had said that they were open until 11, and she rudely told me to check the Facebook page and to go to the cafe up the road….but the cafe up the road was closed because someone had an appointment.. I then asked if we could at least have a cuppa…nope, cold drinks only. It was then the 6 of us walked out, along with the couple who were behind us who were also pretty disappointed.

So much for the sign on the door saying they’re open and ‘welcome to come in’. I get that the kitchen has to close at some point, I’ve worked in hospitality for a long time. But it doesn’t take much to put a sign on the door to say you’re closed, or change the hours listed online, or even be a little more friendly or offer a cup of tea when you’re going to stay open a little longer because others aren’t even halfway through their meal.

I used to have good memories of Walhalla, and had plans to take many family and friends there now we live nearby again…but I’ll pass, and unless you want to feel like an inconvenience, I suggest you do the same. You’d think working a few extra hours over the school holidays would be a good business decision…especially with so many places in town...

A communication issue turned into quite the problem.

A self admitted new staff member approached our table, asking if my partner would like the rest of her sausages, mash and veggies in a takeaway container. My partner said yes.

Her half full plate of food, including an entire sausage and all the veggies and mash that were served was taken away. When the staff member returned, we were only given a sausage in a plastic bag. We explained that we wanted the rest of the meal in a takeaway box and the staff member apologised and said it had already been thrown away. Unfortunate but the new staff member took responsibility.

It was then after I went to the bar to ask for some sort of refund for the almost entire meal that was thrown away, an older lady (seemingly a manager) approached my partner at our table and began to explain to her that there is nothing that they can do and that it was my partners fault that the food was thrown out.

When we went to further explain the issue, we were interrupted and spoken to quite rudely. This is what has prompted such a scathing review.

If staff could please contact me regarding this situation, it would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. the young girl at the bar was lovely and...

Such poor service that we left without ordering!! Last week I booked a table for my family and I to have dinner at the Wally Pub. I booked for 7.30 as I knew that we would be on the 6pm August night train which runs for approximately 1 hour. Upon arrival last night at 7.35 there was no service so we sat at a table with my name on it. A few minutes later a waitress came to the table and snapped at us with instructions to order immediately as the kitchen was about to close. (Pretty disappointing considering it was a Saturday night, in addition to this on an evening that the there is a night train running) I looked at the menu briefly but it seems I couldn't get over the fact that we had been spoken to so rudely. The was absolutely no pleasantries given AT ALL. In the end it left such a sour feel to the night we ended up leaving and got dinner in Traralgon. Unfortunately this experience in Walhalla has made me reconsider ever coming back. Which is sad as I know they have been pushing for tourists to return...

The Wally Pub was the only place open in Walhalla on Thursday except for the Corner Store. Beautiful, remote historic little town. As the only place to eat, the pub was very nearly full, but the meals coming out of the kitchen were really generous, and looked great. We opted for two of the Nachos Parma, a great slab of crumbed chicken, spiced tomato sauce, corn chips, sour cream and avocado, and a nice salad. Delicious. Wood fire inside, and also tables outside in the sun. Really quaint little pub, and it is a little pub. Enjoyed our lunch. The Corner Store, a pleasant walk uptown, has knick-knacks, and local merch. Very quiet here mid-week which is fine and the pub is gold when you’ve been driving and arrive hungry…recommended.

Went for dinner Sunday 6th November 2022. If you want great Aussie classic meals and generous portions, this is it! The pub is original, simple and rustic. I had lamb shanks in rosemary gravy with mashed potato, carrots, broccoli and corn. Hubby had chicken parmigiana with chips and salad. Meals were at the table in 15 minutes and the meals are very generous in size. My lamb shank fell off the bone and the gravy was delicious. Not a huge range of alcoholic drinks, but enough to cover most tastes. The lady who serves at the bar was super friendly and seemed to be managing front of house on her own. The lady cooking the meals was also friendly. It has a very laid back vibe. I thoroughly recommend this place for hungry travellers.

Stopped for lunch at the Wally Pub during a first time visit to the very beautiful town of Walhalla. Gorgeous old fashioned pub with lot’s of memorabilia to look at to while away the time. Took the lovely lass behind the bar’s advice and tried a local cider - Twisted Sister - which was excellent. The food was awesome too - home cooked, fresh and delicious. And enormous serves. Will definitely come back for another visit. Walhalla itself is totally worth the two hour drive from Melbourne especially in the Autumn... Highly recommended... 😋
