Mainamati Museum is a must-visit destination in Cumilla for history and archaeology enthusiasts. Located near the Shalban Bihar archaeological site in Kotbari, this museum houses a remarkable collection of artifacts unearthed from the Mainamati region—an area rich in ancient Buddhist heritage.

The museum displays a wide range of valuable items including bronze and stone sculptures, terracotta plaques, ancient coins, copper plates, seals, and everyday tools used by Buddhist monks centuries ago. These artifacts reflect the cultural, artistic, and religious significance of the Buddhist civilization that once flourished in this region between the 7th and 12th centuries.

The entry fee is Tk 30 for Bangladeshi nationals and Tk 100 for foreign visitors. The museum is open daily, except on public holidays and government-declared closures. It's best to check the opening hours ahead of your visit as they may vary slightly between summer and winter seasons.

Clean, well-maintained, and informative, Mainamati Museum is not only educational but also an ideal place to connect with Bangladesh’s ancient past. A visit here perfectly complements a trip to the nearby archaeological ruins of...

Mainamati (ময়নামতি) is an isolated low, dimpled range of hills, dotted with more than 50 ancient Buddhistsettlements dating to between the 8th and 12th century CE. It was part of the ancient Samatata division of Bengal. It extends through the centre of the district of Comilla in Bangladesh. Mainamati is located almost 8 miles from the town of Comilla. It is the home of one of the most important Buddhistarchaeological sites in the region. Comilla Cantonment is located nearby and houses a beautiful colonial era cemetery. Mainamati is named for the Chandra queen of the same name, mother of Govindachandra. Mainamati is 114  kilometers from Dhaka city through National Highway 1 and is nearly 162 kilometers from Chittagong. Also, there is a Buddhist temple beside it. The Museum has a rich and varied collection of copper plates, gold and silver coins and 86 bronze objects. Over 150 bronze statues have been recovered mostly from the monastic cells, bronze stupas, stone sculptures and hundreds of terracotta plaques each measuring on an average of 9" high and 8"...

Mainamati Museum is next to Shalban Bihar. Many valuable antiquities were found during the excavations of Srivadava’s Mahavihara, Kotila Mura, Charpatra Mura, Rupbanmura, Itakhola Mura, Ananda Bihar, Rani’s Bangla, and Bhoj Raja’s Bari Bihar. To preserve and display these antiquities, a west-facing museum was set up in 1965 in front of Shalban Bihar on the south side of Shalban Bihar in Comilla Kotbari. To the left of the entrance to the museum is a huge bronze statue of Buddha. Then there is the statue of Buddha standing on the sandstone. It was built in the 7th century. There are two copper reigns of the 12th-13th centuries. Other notable items include a huge bronze bell, (weight 370 kg) black stone Shiva’s vehicle, and a Burmese manuscript of palm leaves. The museum’s main building did not have enough space to display important artifacts, so the south side was extended in 1970-71, giving the building an English ‘T’ shape.
