National Botanical Garden Review

Location and Overview The National Botanical Garden of Bangladesh, located in Mirpur, Dhaka, is the largest botanical garden in the country, covering an area of approximately 84 hectares. Established in 1961, it offers a serene and green oasis in the midst of the bustling city. The garden is adjacent to the Bangladesh National Zoo, making it an attractive destination for nature lovers, students, researchers, and families seeking a peaceful retreat.

Plant Collection The garden boasts a rich and diverse collection of over 50,000 species of trees, plants, and shrubs, both indigenous and exotic. Visitors can explore a wide variety of plants, including medicinal herbs, cacti, orchids, palms, and aquatic plants. Notable highlights include the iconic banyan tree, towering palm trees, and an exquisite array of rare flowers and plants from different regions of the world. The garden is divided into several sections, such as a cactus house, orchid house, and medicinal plant garden, offering something for every plant enthusiast.

It provides wide, shaded walking paths, perfect for a relaxing stroll amidst the lush greenery. The natural beauty of the garden, with its well-maintained lawns, artificial lakes, and peaceful ponds, creates a soothing environment for visitors.

Families often visit the garden for picnics, while photographers enjoy capturing the scenic landscapes. Birdwatching is another popular activity, as the garden attracts a variety of bird species. However, some areas of the garden, particularly the restrooms and seating arrangements, could benefit from better maintenance. Visitors have noted that certain sections feel neglected, with overgrown vegetation and a lack of clear signage.

Educational Value The National Botanical Garden plays a significant role in the research and conservation of plant species in Bangladesh. Students and researchers regularly visit to study the wide variety of plants. However, the garden could enhance its educational potential by offering more guided tours, interpretive signs, and interactive programs to raise public awareness about the importance of plant conservation and biodiversity.

Conclusion In summary, the National Botanical Garden is a haven for nature lovers and a valuable resource for plant conservation and education in Bangladesh. Botanical_Garden. When I was in class five (probably) I went to the botanical garden with my family, for the first time, anyway. I was more interested in going to the zoo than seeing the plants, for which I did not like the botanical garden. But recently the environment there has improved. Besides, there has been a new renovation, so we,four School-friends went to visit there. There are several buses to the zoo-road, including the Dishari bus. 💵Bus fare 10tk per person. 💵Botanic Garden entrance fee is 20 tk. (💵Next to the zoo, entrance fee 50tk). 🕰️We went to the botanical garden around 10:30 or a little later. [The Botanical Garden is generally open from 09:00 AM to 05:00 PM during winter.] In the morning, the crowd is very less. We found many beautiful spots to take pictures. It is also a great place for a small picnic. You can easily spend time sitting by the lake, there is a beautiful bridge, although the maingate was locked. We looked around, took many pictures. The situation in the botanical garden is much better than before, to say that there is security. Especially when young visitors are seen wearing uniform during school/college hours, the authorities are calling their parents for questioning and informing them, which is a very necessary step. I saw the area reserved for the naval forces, the general public is not allowed to enter, still the place was quite amazing. There were different types of trees, I liked some of them.

When we school friends get together we laugh like villains, which is indescribable.

There is a small park. There were swings, sleepers, Seesaw etc,two people could easily sit on the swings.Children and adults were enjoying the rides. A place of 215 acres, from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm, we could not explore even half of the place (as we had to return home quickly). But I spent the day very happily, Alhamdulillah. A great place for a picnic with friends or just spending quality time.

Open 7 days a week. Note: You can take a picture of the map given there at the beginning, as a result, you will not miss any...
