Visiting Dochula Pass was truly one of the most breathtaking experiences of Bhutan. Perched at an altitude of 3,100 meters, the pass offers a panoramic view of the majestic Himalayan ranges on a clear day, which feels absolutely surreal. The highlight is undoubtedly the Druk Wangyal Chortens—108 beautifully built stupas that stand gracefully against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains. The atmosphere here is peaceful and spiritual, with prayer flags fluttering in the mountain breeze. It’s a perfect place to pause, reflect, and soak in Bhutan’s natural beauty and cultural richness. The pass is also steeped in history, making it not only a scenic stop but also a meaningful one. Whether you’re traveling between Thimphu and Punakha or simply exploring, Dochula Pass is a must-visit. It’s the kind of place that leaves you in awe and lingers in your memory long after...

One distinctly pleasant spot on the way from Thimphu to Punakha is the Dochula. The meandering road crosses the mountain range at this highest point.

There was a deep cover of clouds all over. The weather was frosty and foggy. The mist coat thinned for a moment providing a glimpse of the valley below as well as the faraway snow-clad peaks. At the same instance that was producing an illusion as if the horizon has sunk and we are on the top of the world.

A walk through the war monument was an enjoyable pastime, but every step uphill was creating enormous exhaustion!

The place overflowed with visitors. The lengthy queue at the bathrooms put in a quarter of an hour more to the...

On our way from thimpu to punakha we stopped at dochula pass....it was around 10:00 a.m. and it looked and felt so nice to be there.... beautiful Valley View and those beautiful typical bhutanese architecture.... I was very happy because I could move around everywhere on my wheelchair, there was a temple which had 15 Steps.... I could not climb up that but I went as close to it to take some beautiful pictures... there is also a small Resort if you need to use the washroom but I did not go that side .....the whole place is very picturesque.... there is also one guest house which looks so beautiful from outside ...the weather was very Misty so everything looked so...

Dochu La (3140m), marked by a large array of prayer flags and an impressive new collection of 108 chortens. On a rare clear day (only really likely between October and February) the pass offers a panoramic view of the Bhutan Himalaya and some groups make special pre-dawn trips up here to catch the views. The collection of chortens were built in 2005 as atonement for the loss of life caused by the flushing out of Assamese militants in southern Bhutan. The hill above the chortens is covered in lovely rhododendron forest, part of the royal botanical park. If you are here between mid-March and the end of April it’s well worth taking some time to wander in the forest.
