I had the incredible opportunity to visit Dochula Pass in June, and it was nothing short of amazing. Nestled at an altitude of 3,100 meters, this mountain pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas. Our journey to Dochula Pass began early in the morning, as we drove through the winding roads from Thimphu. As we ascended, the lush greenery and vibrant flora made the journey itself an enchanting experience. When we finally reached the pass, the sight that greeted us was absolutely stunning. The most iconic feature of Dochula Pass is the 108 chortens (stupas), known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens. These stupas were built in honor of Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives in a battle against Indian insurgents. Walking among these chortens, you can feel the deep sense of history and spirituality that permeates the area. One of the highlights of my visit was the clear view of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. On a clear day, you can see several of Bhutan's highest peaks, including Gangkar Puensum, the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. We were fortunate to have good weather, and the sight of the majestic mountains against the clear blue sky was simply awe-inspiring. There is also a lovely cafe at Dochula Pass where we enjoyed a warm cup of traditional Bhutanese tea. Sitting there, sipping tea and taking in the serene beauty of the landscape, was an experience I will cherish forever. The cool, crisp mountain air and the tranquil ambiance made it a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection. In addition to the natural beauty, Dochula Pass also hosts the Dochula Druk Wangyal Festival in December, which celebrates Bhutanese culture and traditions with vibrant performances and festivities. Although I visited in June, the stories of this festival added another layer of cultural richness to my understanding of the place. Overall, my visit to Dochula Pass was an unforgettable experience. The combination of stunning natural scenery, historical significance, and peaceful atmosphere makes it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Bhutan. I highly recommend taking the time to explore this beautiful pass and soak in all it has to offer.

Dochula Pass is one of the best locations to sight the high rise snow capped Himalayan ranges of Bhutan in the far distance. At an elevation of 3,150 meters /10,200 feet, it is about an hour drive from Thimphu to reach the Pass and a must stopover Enroute to Punakha and further to the eastern parts of Bhutan. From Thimphu the road gently winds up through the pine forests and settlements of Hongtsho and Yusipang. At the Pass one can visit the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang/temple built in honor and to pay homage to the Monarchs of Bhutan who have championed in shaping Bhutan as we see today. On a small hill, 108 beautifully constructed chortens (mini-stupas) sits adorning the landscape opening into the panoramic view of the great Snow Capped Himalayan ranges of Bhutan. The mini-stupas were built in dedication to the Fourth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck who led the Bhutanese army to victory against the militant insurgents from Assam, India in 2003 and in memory of lives lost on both the sides. Bhutanese families come to the Pass for weekend getaways with picnic lunches and on auspicious days to light butter lamps and circumambulate the chortens. You can also drop in at the Dochula cafĂŠ for coffee and snacks, or to stretch your legs before continuing your journey for the day. From the Pass there is also the option to hike to Lungchutse temple where the view of the mountains and valleys are even more impressive. The hike is about 2.5 hours along forests of pine and Rhododendrons in full bloom in the spring.
