Two days and one night in Busan 🌊 It's really beautiful on a sunny day!

Busan, a Foodie Town or Capital? In Singapore (and of course Malaysia & Indonesia) we have amazing hawker food, but when it comes to street food Busan must surely be on the top! (Now I hear my Thai & Vietnamese bitching & complaining, 😆😆😆) 1st Day in Busan, walked two markets including the famous BIFF food street and some fun pictures along the way! Not much of an excursion otherwise as major rain storm was forecasted, but afternoon was truly enjoyable, walking and tasting all the wonderful things on offer! Between Gukje Market & BIFF, which are pretty much next to each other, this place is magical for any serious foodie, and we haven’t even explored many other recommended areas! The variety, on offer makes any food heart jump high, also impressive s the cleanliness (totally no smells, only wonderful aromas) and each stall/stand is pretty meticulously in their crafting these amazing morsels! My Diet has totally taken a backseat and that’s ok, we are not coming here every other day or week, so some indulgence is in order! I can’t wait what the rest of the week has on offer for us! This is an amazing location for any foodie! Highly recommended! Busan’s modern movie district was originally little more than a pair of cinemas that were built following Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule over half a century ago. However, major renovations took place ahead of the first Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), and the newly transformed district was named BIFF Square on August 14, 1996. Having been remade into a cultural tourist attraction promoting the advancement of Korea’s film industry, BIFF Square has contributed to Busan’s newfound status as an international cultural tourist city. The 428 meter-long street stretching from the Buyeong Theater in Nampo-dong to the overpass in Chungmu-dong was divided into “Star Street” and “Festival Street,” and on the eve of the festival each year the “BIFF Square Ground Opening” is held on the street. During the ceremony, events such as the hand printing of famous movie celebrities and Nunggot Jeomdeung (snow-flower lighting) take place. A district such as BIFF Square, crowded with first-run theaters in a city is rare not only in Asia but Europe as well, and for this reason it holds great potential. In recent years, the square has grown into a more complex area, featuring not only movie theaters but also shops and leisure facilities, attracting growing numbers of young visitors and tourists.

BIFF is a fairly big area. It starts by the road side and then it runs in deep into a sort of cross junction. So what’s at BIFF? I guess when the film festival isn’t here, then on a day to day basis, you will find lots of pop up stalls sell delicious food. Several of these hawkered stalls are rated on YouTube and it’s pretty interesting to see them live cooking it 😆 There is also a huge cat cafe here that you can get to spend unlimited time with the cats. Lots of places to have food, drinks, cosmetic shopping. Head north from the entrance, you will walk into Gukje Market. Love the vibe of this market in the morning however, they pretty much wind down and close by 3pm. Go early to you wanna catch a good bargain. To the East, you will find the famous Busan Tower, park and across the road from there, Lotte Mall. I will start the day by entering BIFF via the main road / entrance. Head north to visit the market, then walk back out (when the stalls starts closing) towards BIFF again and turn east to the Busan tower to capture a nice sunset view of the tower and park. Then end with dinner at the port side - Jagalchi Market (check out my other post for details)

BIFF (or Busan International Film Festival) Square aims to be something like Hollywood's Walk of Fame with commemorative "squares" plastered into the walkway, but it is mostly a night market with lively atmosphere. You can enjoy some of Busan's street food or get your palms read or fortune told by one of the many stalls here. While I enjoyed the atmosphere, BIFF square did not really impress me with their stalls as they can get quite repetitive in their offerings (what's with Busan and their cloned stalls, anyway?). The seafood they sold in some stalls were also quite similar to the ones you can find in other markets around Busan. Still, it's quite an enjoyable place to hangout during the evening/night, and there are also many shops around aside from the stalls selling different things. The place is also conveniently located a short walk away from Jagalchi metro station.

This is a fun spot to explore in Busan. It's mix between tourists and local and the alleys are packed with street food and restaurants - can be crowded on weekend. The food choices are numerous and not limited to Korean food as there are croissants, ice cream, beer, etc. I think korean barbeque is a must try - especially the pork on the grill which very different that what I can find in US which is typically beef or spicy pork. The pork is cut thick and it's very juicy and tender. The street food is fun to sample - my favorite is the fried chicken which is byte size and comes with or without sauce. The sauce is sweet and spicy but not too spicy. The best part is it's inexpensive. I even saw churros vendor. I did not stay until dark but I would imagine it's a popular place in the evening also.
