40 steps is a historical staircase in Busan near Yongdusan Park that is essentially a 40-step staircase. It’s importance come as a point or reunification between love ones during and after the Korean War. Today, the area around 40 Steps is restored to reflect Korea in the 1950s and 60s and it’s a beautiful district lined with cafes and quirky shops.
Right next to the 40 steps is the cafe Wakey Wakey. A great place to have conversations over coffee, to laugh over a couple of tales or to simply share a moment of solitude with your cup.
At the top of 40 Steps. I think I climbed this a few times already. I’m particular intrigued by the open cabling of power lines. Creates a sense of raw character within this district....
Read moreThe location on google maps is misleading, the stairs are a couple dozen meters south of there. If you are at the location pointed by google maps, you should see an elevator in front of you. What I would suggested is going up the elevator, then going to the "Forty Steps Cultural Center" across the street. On the 5th floor there is a small free exhibit about the 40 step stairs. Everything is in Korean but they should give you an english pamphlet that explains the exhibit. Also at the back of the pamphlet there is map that shows where the stairs are. Basically when you exit the building go right and walk a few dozen meters until you see the stairs...
Read moreTo appreciate this place, one must understand the historical meaning of this rebuilt, relocated steps. There's a cultural center located to the right, on top of the 40 stairs; it is a local heritage center that presents the local scene just after the Korean War, and gives glimpse to life of war-impacted average persons. The original 40-steps was where refugees, individuals with lost family would gather in hopes of getting news, any information of their loved ones.
