Rocinha Favela Tour — Attraction in Região Geográfica Imediata do Rio de Janeiro

I was visiting Rio from Canada and when I arrived I was on the fence about visiting the favelas. I was concerned about both safety and whether visiting the favelas would even be an appropriate or respectful thing to do. My friends and I ended up doing a favela tour of Rocinha with Alessandro from Rocinha Favela Tour and it was honestly one of the biggest highlights of my trip.

Alessandro, who is born and raised in Rocinha still lives there with his family and his love for the place could be felt throughout the tour. He’s incredibly passionate about disproving misconceptions about the favelas and instead shifting the focus towards sharing with us the beauty, art and rich culture that lives within Rocinha. Doing our tour with Alessandro, not only did he make us feel safe while with him but he showed us just how safe the favela can be. Whether we were checking out the stunning views, riding around on the back of a motorcycle, dropping in on a dance class or any of the other things we did on the tour, it was well curated and ensured we had a great time!

Checking out Rocinha was a phenomenal experience and a large part of that is due to our gracious host Alessandro.
