A visual feast, of course it's a must do and one I can tick of the bucket list. But here are a few things I wish I knew before I came.

You can take 2x 500ml bottles in with you and 2 items of food each. You buy tokens first and then wait in the queue to collect your drink (with your token) so don't be fooled by a shorter line. The tourists section, number 9, is exactly that, but there aren't any attendants that could speak english (well one that I got directed to down the way a bit because they didn't understand what I meant by 'toilet'). Taxi rank is nearby, again speak to the people attending the 'line' and they will give you a ticket with the area of Rio you want to go to and the price, you hand this to the taxi man and tell him where you want to go. For comfort take something soft to sit on and prepare to have a wet bum if it has rained at all recently as water pools on the seats. You can buy drinks (cans) and ice cream from men but it is relatively expensive for Rio. Toilets at the bottom of section 9 seemed to be not for section 9, they were down the numbered seating a little and were full of spiders, pretty dirty and take some toilet paper. Because there had been rain, there were boards to get in so not great if you have any mobility issues.

These are just practical points, I had an amazing time and got completely sucked into the whirl wind atmosphere. Dancing, costumes and music leaves nothing to be desired. We had seats R 54 in section 9, we were sat in the middle, close to the back, we still had a great view, and nothing to stop you heading down to the front if you wanted to, despite allocated...

We went to the Sambadrome to watch the spectacular parades which were fabulous. However, we opted to pay for the Folia Tropical suite which was very expensive thinking we would get a better view than sitting in bleachers. Though you get free drinks and food, it was way too packed with people. If you didn’t arrive early and stake out a place to watch then you were out of luck. We ended up standing on the 2nd level behind some people who snagged the bench in front of the railing. The 10 rows of people behind us wouldn’t be able to see anything. On the first level which was closer to the street, it looked like a floor level seats like at a rock concert except no seats and if you were not in the front row then you wouldn’t be able to see much. God help you if you wanted another drink or needed the bathroom. Your spot would be gone. People would be shoving cameras beside you and above you trying to capture the parade as it went by. In retrospect, we should have bought the open air box seats we could see across from us. Yes, the Folia suite was across the judges booth but it’s not worth anything if you can’t see the parade. We ended up leaving after the first group finished and people were jostling to get our spot. Not...

ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CARNAVAL IN RIO 🇧🇷 📍SAVE THIS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE! We just got back from a week in Rio Carnival and here’s what we learnt! 🏠 WHERE TO STAY Hands down at the @fairmontrio, not only do they have the best location in the city, but they also get special access to various events and even host their own. Plus, the views are incredible! 💃🏽 WHERE IS THE CARNIVAL IN RIO? ➡️ The big samba parade is in the Sambadrome, in Santa Teresa. You’ll want to try get tickets in “Sector 6” this has the best view of the competition and it’s also where the judges sit so performers put on their best in front of this section. ➡️ Carnaval celebrations however, are EVERYWHERE almost all the time (especially the first week) and you’ll run into unofficial Carnival parties “blocos” randomly on the streets too - just go with it 🤘🏽 🙋🏽‍♀️ DID WE FEEL SAFE? ➡️ We didn’t find Rio as intimidating as sooo many people hyped it up to be. We’ve been to more dangerous places, for sure. Just stay cautious of your surroundings as you would anywhere, and you’ll be fine ✅ 💸 HOW MUCH? Here are some standard expenses to budget for if you want to see Rio Carnival: ➡️ Carnival performance tickets: $20-$400 depending on where you want to sit
➡️Hotel rooms: ~$400 USD/night ➡️Uber rides: ~$2 USD ➡️Caiparinhas: ~$4 USD ➡️Metro ride: ~$1 USD ➡️Bikini sets: ~$20 USD ➡️Lunch: ~$15USD 💸 WHAT TO DO DURING THE DAY? See our profile highlights for everything we did in Rio! 🇧🇷 Carnival is so much more than a party - it’s African history, mixing of cultures, celebration, and incredible art and storytelling. Don’t miss it amongst all the fun!!
