Vasil Levski National Museum — Attraction in Karlovo

The national museum of Vasil Levski is situated in the central region of the town of Karlovo. The museum complex includes the native house of Vasil Levski, a memorial chapel “Vsyah Svetih Bolgarskih” (All Saints of Bulgaria), Chardaklieva House, a museum exposition and the monument of Gina Kuncheva – the mother of Levski.

Vasil Ivanov Kunchev - Levski (1837 – 1873), also known as the Apostle of Freedom, is the most renowned hero in the Bulgarian history. A fighter for freedom, a revolutionary and a furtherer of equality, he is one of the basic ideologists and organizer of the struggles for national liberation from Ottoman dominion in the 19th century. He was hanged by the Ottoman authorities on 19 February 1973 in Sofia City.

The museum of Vasil Levski has a long-term history. Its beginning is related to the restoration of the native house of the Apostle in 1933 and its opening as a museum in 1937. The house is a small one-storey building with a basement, a cellar, and a shelter on the ground floor, and two rooms on the floor – one bedroom and one guest-room. A workshop is stuck to the house – a small construction consisting of a room with a shed. The initial appearance of the house is restored by courtesy of Levski’s nieces – the daughters of his sister Yana.

A room for documental exposition was constructed near the house in 1955. Consequently, it appeared to be too small and a new building was constructed in 1965, and the old one was reconstructed into a cinema-room. From 1968 to 1992 the museum house was a branch of the Local Historical Museum in Karlovo. Since 1993 it has been an independent museum. On 21 July 2000 it was declared a state cultural institute of national significance.

Since 1994 the Museum Complex in Karlovo has been restoring and expanding. The Chardaklieva House and Memorial Chapel “Vsyah Svetih Bolgarskih” were included.

The Chardaklieva House is situated next to the native house of Vasil Levski. The family of the Apostle’s aunt – Dona Chardaklieva – a sister of Gina Kuncheva was living in the Chardaklieva House. The house was constructed around 1840.

The memorial chapel “Vsyah Svetih Bolgarskih” was constructed in honor of the Apostle.

The museum exposition had been collected for more than 65 years and stores belongings, documents and pictures, related to the family, the life and the activity of Vasil Levski, his associates from Karlovo and other regions of the country. All scientific biographic researches and literature works dedicated to the Apostle, pieces of fine arts, etc. are kept here.

Nowadays the museum of Vasil Levski is one of the most visited memorial museums in Bulgaria.

On 19 February, the date on which the Apostle was hanged, every year Karlovo celebrates the deed and the self-sacrifice of Vasil Levski. Contests, exhibitions, literature meetings, etc. are being organized.

Националният музей „Васил Левски“ в Карлово е посветен на българския национален герой Васил Левски.

В продължение на няколко десетилетия в нея са събирани и се съхраняват вещи, документи и снимки, свързани със семейството, с живота и делото на Васил Левски, на негови сподвижници както от Карлово, така и от други краища на страната. Пазят се почти всички научни биографични изследвания и литературни творби, посветени на Левски, произведения на изобразителното изкуство.

Къща музей Редактиране Къщата представлява едноетажна сграда, състояща се от стая, вкопана в земята, зимник, килер, в който се съхраняват сандък с брашно и нощви, и скривалище. В приземната част се намират две стаи. До къщата има разположена долапена работилница за плетене на гайтани и полуоткрита бояджийница. След като в годините около Освобождението къщата рухва, през 1933 г. е изготвен проект от архитект Димитър Иванов и сформиран обществен комитет за реставриране на родната къща на Васил Левски, начело с кмета на Карлово Аристотел Янакиев и с помощта на жителите на Карлово и войници от местния гарнизон. Възстановяването на вътрешната уредба в къщата е поверена на дъщерите на сестра му Яна.

Експозиционна зала Редактиране Експозиционната зала е построена през 1965 г. В нея са представени материали, посветени на родното място и рода на Васил Левски – произведения на изобразителното изкуство, които отразяват важни моменти от живота и революционното дело на Апостола, вещи, документи и снимки на Васил Левски, научни биографични изследвания и литературни творби на български и чуждестранни автори, посветени на Апостола. Тук могат да се видят още устав на БРЦК, униформа от Първата българска легия, знамето на Карловския революционен комитет, основан от Апостола през 1869 г.

Мемориален параклис Редактиране През 2000 година в музейния комплекс е построен по проект на архитект Мария Каразлатева мемориалният параклис „Всех святих болгарских", в памет на Апостола. В него се съхраняват част от неговите коси. Иконостасът е изработен от Явор Петров и Марин Куртев, иконите и стенописите са дело на Владимир Аврамов и Йордан Христов. В параклиса звучи ангелогласният хор на Йоан Кукузел с „Достойно есть“, едно от любимите песнопения на Левски.

Please don't get me wrong! The place feels and smells amazingly nostalgic, and genuine.

However, somehow I didn't feel the spirit of one of the greatest (if not the greatest) Bulgarians ever lived!

The museum with its exposures is the best thing to see there. Only there you could "touch" the spirit of this remarkable person.

I've recently been visiting the Geo Milev house museum in Stara Zagora. Man, that was an experience! You could literally touch some of his (or his family) belongings. You could watch a short movie that is running constantly on a screen.

I'm sorry if I lack knowledge of Levski, but I thought that more of what he left was preserved for...
