Barrier Lake in Kananaskis Country, just an hour west of Calgary, is a stunning man-made lake in Bow Valley Provincial Park that earns a solid 4-star rating! The lake’s crystal-clear, glacial-fed waters and dramatic backdrop of Mount Baldy and surrounding peaks make it a breathtaking spot for a day trip. The wildflowers along the trails, especially in July, add vibrant pops of color, transforming the landscape into a picturesque scene perfect for photography or a peaceful stroll. The Prairie View Trail, a 4.8-mile out-and-back hike, offers rewarding views of the lake and Kananaskis Valley, with moderate elevation gain that’s manageable for most hikers. The trail is also a hit for birding and snowshoeing, and I loved spotting colorful blooms along the way.The Barrier Lake Day Use Area is a highlight, with a rocky beach for picnics, washrooms, and a boat launch where you can rent kayaks or canoes from Kananaskis Outfitters for a paddle on the chilly but scenic waters. The area feels vibrant yet serene, though parking can get crowded on weekends, so arriving early is a must. The nearby trails, like the short Barrier Lake Lookout (0.7 miles), provide quick access to stunning vistas, and the wildflowers here are a real treat in summer. For those seeking adventure, the lake is a gateway to longer hikes like Jewell Pass or Yates Mountain, though the gravel-heavy trails can feel monotonous for some. While the scenery and activities are fantastic, the lake’s popularity means it can feel busy, especially in summer, and the cold water isn’t ideal for swimming. A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for parking, which is a minor hassle but worth it for the well-maintained facilities. The wind can also pick up quickly, so check the forecast before canoeing. Overall, Barrier Lake’s natural beauty, wildflowers, and accessible trails make it a near-perfect outdoor escape, just shy of 5 stars due to crowds and trail repetition. Highly recommend for a...
Read moreWe visited Barrier Lake earlier in the day and had a great time Paddle boarding and Kayaking. It was a bit windy when we first got on the water, but by around 10:00 AM, the sun came out and the lake completely transformed. The wind died down, the water turned glassy, and it became the perfect place to just float and relax.
By 11:00 AM, it started getting really hot, so we were glad we got there early. The parking lot was starting to fill up by then too, so an early arrival definitely pays off—both for a peaceful paddle and a decent parking spot.
The mountain views surrounding the lake are absolutely stunning, and the water is incredibly clear. After about half an hour of paddling, it felt like we had the place to ourselves.
Barrier Lake is definitely a go-to spot if you’re looking for calm water, mountain air, and a peaceful paddle—just aim to arrive early and...
Read moreThe scenery was incredible. There is a spot right by the beach where you can rent paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes so you don't have to transport them. You need a credit card for a security deposit though, so be prepared for that. The lake is very cold, so not very good for swimming but perfect for enjoying non motorized boats. We brought our inflatable paddle boats and that was awesome too. It wasn't crowded, but for the best parking, come earlier. There are lots of different spots to park though with lots of different accesses to the lake (only one with the rentals boats though. ) Bring a picnic, enjoy a good hike and float or paddle around and...
