Trail: The trail is an out-and-back route, totaling approximately 4.6 miles (7.4 kilometers) with an elevation gain of around 1,600 feet (488 meters). The trail is generally well-maintained, but it can be muddy and slippery after rain. Proper footwear is essential.
Difficulty: The hike is considered moderate to challenging. The first 2 kilometers of the trail is a challenging hike with a steep incline and loose rocks. The rest of the trail is a moderate walk through the forest with some gradual inclines. Be aware of a short, steep section with loose stones near the end that requires some caution. Overall, it's a good workout, but manageable for most hikers with decent fitness levels.
Time: The hike takes about 2 - 2.5 hour to reach top and about 1.5 hour to trek down.
Parking: Parking can be tricky, especially on weekends and holidays. The Lions Bay trailhead (Sunset Trail Parking Lot) offers limited parking spaces. There's also a 30-minute limit at Tunnel Bay. Consider carpooling or arriving early to snag a spot. You can park near the elementary school for free, although it's a 10-15 minute walk to the trailhead. Paid street parking is also available along the road.
Facilities: A porta-toilet and water are available at the trailhead.
Viewpoints: The trail itself is mostly forested with limited views until you reach the final viewpoint. During the rainy season, you'll encounter two beautiful waterfalls and a wooden bridge along the trail. But the wait is worth it! The final viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramic vistas of Howe Sound, the Gulf Islands, and the Coast Mountains.
Final Viewpoint: The final viewpoint is the payoff for the hike. It offers stunning panoramic views of Howe Sound, dotted with numerous islands. You'll also be able to spot Brunswick Mountain, Mt. Harbey, West Lion, and even Highway 99 and Lions Bay itself. It's a perfect spot to relax, take in the scenery, and enjoy a well-deserved break. Remember to be mindful of your footing near the edge.

Read moreTunnel Bluffs hike is an intermediate hike with a spectacular viewpoint! One of the best views I've ever seen. The distance is approximately 11-14km, depending on where you can get parking. We hiked on a Sunday in early October 2022 on a day with clear blue skies, sunshine and 23 degrees.
We parked at Lions Bay Elementary School overflow parking lot. If the perimeter parking spots are taken, you can park in the middle of the lot. Just be sure to leave enough room for other cars to exit. Parking is free and there are two porta potties. Head up the hill for about 1km to the Tunnel Bluffs trailhead. There is a porta potty here too but no others along the route.
The first 2km of the hike is a bit of an uphill slog on a gravelly logging road through the forest. After this, you'll walk along some flat and up-and-down sections and over two log bridges. The bridges have rope handles, so don't worry if you don't have great balance.
Before you reach the bluffs, you have to scramble up and over some rocks for a few metres before emerging onto a large rocky outcrop. Here you'll stop in your tracks at the breathtaking view.
From the bluffs, you can see Bowen Island, the Sunshine Coast, Horseshoe Bay, the Sea to Sky Highway, Langdale on the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island in the distance. A perfect place to rest, picnic and take photos.
Our hike, including the walk to the trailhead from the parking lot was 14.8 km and took 4 hours 15 minutes including a 30 minute stop at the top. The way back, downhill on a gravelly path might be tough for someone with bad knees and I definitely recommend poles as it's easy to slip and lose your footing.
This is a fabulous hike for anyone with a reasonable...
