I am reading the reviews and am very sad to say we did not have the same experience as many appear to have had. We were driving through from Ontario on Sunday, August 27, 2023 and saw the sign and decided to detour and visit. We arrived around 1:45pm. We have never been treated so badly. When we went in there was a reserved table and 2 tables taken. The table by the door was available and due to the fact that there were 5 of us we asked if they could get us an extra chair. They did so, but not willing, which we found odd - it was like it was a major inconvenience. However, we walked over to the table and found it was still dirty from the previous guests. When the person working came over to give us the chair we asked if we could have the table cleaned. She went and got a cloth and started wiping everything off of it onto the floor without moving anything. There was still food on the table so we asked he if she could get a couple of more spots and she sighed and wiped them but not properly as the food and smears were still there, then just turned and walked away. We were not about to eat at a dirty table nor continue to be treated so poorly so we got up and left. It was a very disappointing experience. Not ever the person working at the information counter was...
Read moreThis is a restaurant combined with a potato museum. The restaurant basically sells McCain frozen fries cooked into various configurations. It's not much better than what you can make at home in an air fryer. Poutine was underwhelming and used shredded cheese instead of curds, which is just lazy. Staff were friendly and service was fast. Prices were pretty low. Restaurant was almost completely empty.
The low star rating is mostly for the museum. It's an okay museum, someone obviously cares about it - solid exhibits and setup. However, I was entirely unimpressed to enter the Potato Hall of Recognition - I joked to my wife as we stepped inside: "want to bet it's all old white men?"
To my great irritation, my prediction was 100% correct. This is total B.S. There is absolutely no way that there isn't a single woman or person of colour who has contributed to the Canadian potato industry. I have never seen such obvious evidence of patriarchy and anti-inclusionary sentiment. I can only assume that the only people voting on this "recognition" are white men themselves. I am ashamed to have given money to this establishment. Grow up, McCains, and think about the world you want to pass on to...
Read moreJune 2023 A gem of a museum to capture the world of potato growing. The story of the people involved, and the history of potatoes. Situated in the heart of potato growing country and down the road from McCain Foods Canada. This is where the McCain brothers started their business in 1956. Unfortunately, not open to the public.
The $6 entry fee allowed us to enter the museum and look around. Not large, but well laid out and detailed. The cashier (forgot her name) was great. Knowledgeable, and she gave a private tour. I don't know if this is always the case.
I have been here multiple times. My relatives are from this area, and are still farming potatoes. It is a tough way of life, but thank you to those who still farm and put food on our tables!
In the front is a large Muskoka chair. Fun for photos.
In the back is a race track and fun things for kids and families to do.
Inside, there is also an area to buy some local New Brunswick products, and eat at the restaurant. You name it, they have anything potato on the menu. We had sandwiches and potato soup (of course) which were delicious. The tables and chairs are unique because they are made out of...
