There didn't appear to be many tourist traps or museums open on a Sunday in Cape Breton when my wife and I visited for our anniversary, so we chose the Miner's Museum more or less by default. I am so glad that we did! The museum itself is NOT government funded, and is a labour of love for former coal miners. The honesty and heart-felt wish to educate sets this museum apart from many others in the province. I would recommend taking the time (and investing the money) to do the actual mine tour. It is a bit of a commitment, as the tour will take up to two hours! But it is an incredible opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of what life for a coal miner in NS was like. (Our guide - Jerry MacNeil - like many guides at the museum, was a third generation miner. ) I am somewhat claustrophobic, but surprisingly had no issues in the mine itself, so please don't opt out of the tour, if that is your concern as well! The story of coal mining in Nova Scotia includes some dark and unsettling details...especially around 1925!...but the museum and its guides address these with honesty and respect, and it is well worth your time to understand this huge piece of Canadian history. Highly...
Read moreA must-visit! We had the most amazing time at the Cape Breton Miners Museum. It’s incredibly interactive and real - we actually got to walk underground into an actual coal mine! The whole experience was eye-opening from start to finish. Our guide, Jerry, was a retired miner from a multigenerational mining family and an absolutely hilarious storyteller. Although the mining history in Canada is somewhat tragic, Jerry was still able to convey his experiences appropriately. Hearing his stories and firsthand experiences made the tour unforgettable. One thing to note: pets aren’t allowed underground, but I saw the front desk staff kindly looking after someone’s dog while they went on the tour. If you’re traveling with a pet, just ask in advance as they seem very pet-friendly! We wish we knew that option as we were traveling with our pet and had to make other accommodation for him. Highly recommend this unique and...
