UPDATE 2024: I am deeply saddened that the museum, and what should be a historical landsite, is closing its doors June 2024... TAKE THE TRIP BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. Most artifacts will be shared between the Haileybury Museum and Cobalt Museum. ORIGINAL POST 2023: What a fantastic place. I've been visiting annually since 2008. Many changes are made that break my heart (ie. main floor exhibits changing or being closed), but what a remarkable place to get a wealth of information about the area as well as its forever evolving economy. I've brought many families and family members (of all ages), and the children have enjoyed themselves. Even just once, the château is a must-see.

I had a fantastic time visiting the Museum of Northern History at Sir Harry Oakes Chateau in Kirkland Lake. The unique building itself is a delight, and I spent a solid hour reading up on the rich history of the area. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the ambiance was both educational and relaxing. It would be wonderful if the museum offered a weekly tea time during the summer; I think it could attract even more visitors. Highly recommend this hidden gem for anyone interested in local history!

Showed up just before close but the lady curating the museum was very nice and allowed us in past closing. She really helped us learn and absorb the history of kirkland lakes including showing us what was just behind the property. She also sold me on a book celebrating 100 years of kirklands lakes by local residents and I couldn't stop reading it. The hockey and union history was eye-opening. Definitely recommend.
