Whonnock Lake Park — Attraction in Maple Ridge

During the week in the afternoons the park area is relatively quiet, with few people and little noise. You can take boats on the lake, but quite annoyingly, there are no electric or gas powered motors allowed (unless, of course, you are a kayak instructor, in which case you can operate a loud gas-powered motor no problem!). You can fish at the lake, there are black crappies and rainbow trout to catch. The east side of the lake is shallow and littered with Lilly pads, however the west side is quite deep. The lake is split in half by buoys that make up lanes for the kayaking club, making it more difficult to reach the west side. It makes it even tricker knowing that you have to row over the lanes faster than the teams of kayakers racing down them (because the only motor allowed on the lake is the kayak instructors boat…). Despite the negatives, this is a peaceful place for a picnic by the lake and fishing during the week. On the weekends it is jam-packed by 10am. What a great urban lake. Been here twice in the past few weeks. The fishing was really good. There's a few floating docks throughout the lake. The area to launch boats isn't clearly marked but you'll see where the other vehicles are parked right up to the waters edge. I recommend launching, and keeping your spot, or run the risk that there isn't any spots to load your boat when you're ready to leave. This is a kids friendly park! It has two main parts: the land and the Whonnock Lake. The water part is larger than the land part. There is a great playground, a sandy beach. a nice fishing dock, a small garden, a boating club and a visit center, of course the amazing lake as well for your various family activities, like gathering, picnics, fishing, boating, or swimming etc..
