Never thought I'd give a negative post here. I grew up with Masstown Market when it was a tiny room selling hamburgers fries chowder, yes back then. As the Market grew I was always there to cheer it on. Had surgery on my hip healed, decided since I hadn't been to the market since 2018. I will never ever go back. The two friendly were in sunglasses area. sweet and very willing to help me find what I wanted. spent $80. on eggs greens typical things at the market, cashier was same grumpy one from 2018, no hello no smiles. Went across the street as was tol there was a cafe. thought I'd like tea and a dessert. The female at desk/cash to the left when u walk in had that hi, she really didn't want to say. Lots of Christmas decorations there. I missed the nooks crannies of across the street admiring the decorations. Here was a big room. Cafe up back, long walk for me with one leg shorter. No comfortable places to sit and relax. Stools. Two young ones behind the counter couldn't stop talking to each. Wasn't inviting so i went over to the freezer, had heard they planned to make ice cream. Picked up vanilla walked to the girl who said hi when I was first in the door. Got to the counter, she had to see I was struggling walking. No one in the place so she wasn't busy. Said oh yu have to have "that" rung in at cafe. No offer to do it for me meaning walk my cash and ice cream to cafe for me. I walked up to freezer put it back. Girls in cafe never skipped a beat in their conversation. On my way out the door said to myself, I will never go back to Masstown Market. GONE, is Laurie. GONE is Priscilla. GONE is the country hospitality. GONE is the small nooks and crannies. GREED always takes on a new perspective when there's lots of money let's go big. What about keeping it smaller so seniors can walk around easily like we used to and save your money for yourselves don't make these big...
Read moreLocated in a laid back, picturesque rural community, Masstown Market is a thriving business. Following media coverage for an award won for a seafood dish unique to MM, clever social media advertising....not to mention word of mouth referrals, MM's appeal has spread internationally.
I'm a regular who lives locally and drop in for either a coffee, one of their plethora of yummy baked sweets or one of they're dizzying selection of ice creams. I try to sit at my regular booth or very close to it as it's perfectly situated for "people watching".
You'll see people of all nationalities dropping in while holidaying from around the globe. They also have a huge produce section, a decent grocery section, gift shop, gardening center, and even a liquor store. They're produce and meats are supplied by local farms and there's a big emphasis on organic. It's beautiful to sit outside in the summer. They also host antique car exhibitions, and live music.
Finally, let's not forget the "Catch Of The Bay" fish & chip restaurant and take out. It's uniquely shaped like a lighthouse, has indoor and outdoor seating and boasts the best fish & chips this side of the pond! :-) Strangely enough, a lady of British origin works the counter. ;-) In conclusion, I'd say MM is certainly a "must visit" for anyone holidaying in...
Read moreI hadn't been to the Masstown Market in years. My last visit was when there was a hotel across the road (which I know is dating me). While the store itself had a fair few people inside, everyone was regulated to wearing masks, and there were plenty of signs about maintaining social distancing. A gentleman at the front of the store was only allowing a certain amount of people in at a time, and there was a separate area for those who were just there for ice cream. I had no concerns about how they were handling the covid-19 situation. I felt safe, and welcome in the shop, as well as in the restaurant side. I got to try the seafood pie for the first time, and it's probably the best meal I've had in a long, long time. The staff were helpful, and although they had run out of a few things that I would have liked to have picked up, I was NOT disappointed with their prices, the quality of the products, or the store itself. A lot of people seem to be complaining about very minor things, and not remembering that we're all in this pandemic together. Great to see a local business thriving. Can't wait...
