Okay environment, rude staff. I understand that many parks are not dog friendly. So before we decided to came here, I looked up their website (as per photos) where only indicated dogs need to be on leash at all times. Nothing about dog prohibited areas. The other two families of our group came earlier and found a spot right next to the parking lot (dogs are allowed in the parking lot). We never paid attention to dog signs as I thought this is a dog friendly place. However there was some distance from our spot to the water where my kids were playing and my husband was watching them. He had to go the bathroom so asked me to watch the kids. I had to brought our dog. when I noticed there were kids around and kept the dog on a really close leash.
Before my husband could make it back, a female staff came over and asked me to leave the area right away, saying it was a conservation area. I totally understood but was confused as the website didn't mention anything about it. My kids (under 10) were still in the water, but the staff insisted I had to leave right away. And escorted me to the dog area. I said at least I could tell my friends and ask one of the adults to watch the kids and get our stuff. 'You can text them.' I was told!!! At a place with poor to no reception??? While no one was watching my kids???
I get that there are rules. But they should be clearly written on the website. After that I stayed only by the parking lot and saw quite a few dog owners walking into the prohibited area. I guess I'm not the only one who got the wrong message.
I really wish the staff member could be more helpful and reasonable when things like this happen. Offer an appropriate solution instead of solving the problem in a rigid way. After all, we are the taxpayers. This is also our home and our environment which I respect. And me and my family are too deserved to...
Read moreDecent picnic facilities and very good access to the lake for kayaking. The trail around the lake was a bit muddy in some spots along the northwest side of the lake, but we were able to get around them well enough. We decided to attempt the trail to Rolley Falls, knowing from other reviews that it was going to be more difficult, but we had all the regrets. If you just want to see the Falls (which aren't particularly impressive), I would recommend walking in to them and then walking out the same way. There are a couple of muddy spots which can be crossed by stepping on trunks and branches. A particularly bad spot to the left of a fork can be bypassed by proceeding down the right fork and then taking the wye. Where the Falls loop becomes difficult is as you head north towards the Forest Service Road. The trail descends towards the road very quickly, which also means a steep ascent on your way back. It can be tempting to throw in the towel and followed the Forest Service Road, but it leads to Stave Falls which would be a very long walk back to the Rolley Lake parking lot. If you're looking at the Lake and Falls loops on AllTrails, the 1 hour and 20 minute estimate is not accurate. It took us nearly two hours to complete both loops. I would do the Lake loop again, but I would not bother with the Falls loop unless you're doing it for the challenge. The Falls Loop is not well marked, there is no cell service in some spots, and not much in the way of safety barriers, so be careful out there. There is decent cell service all around the...
Read moreGreat family campground close to the city. 20-25 minutes away from Superstore and Walmart. There are a few campsites that are not recommend: the ones next to the playground / bathrooms (especially #19) as kids wake early and they play with enthusiasm. At Rolley Lake, there is less privacy than other campgrounds as the sites are close together, there are fewer trees and the driveway into each site is very short. Other sites to avoid are the ones where there is a shortcut path to go through (to water, or the shower) including sites 11, 13 and 56 as the path isn't clearly marked (just by fallen trees) and at night, it's hard to see so you may find campers wandering onto your site as they've lost the path. Bathrooms are older, but cleaned often. Several things out of order when I was there - doors without locks, broken hand dryer. 2 shower stalls on each side with wonderfully warm water. No mice problem but keep an eye out for chipmunks, who are hungry, curious and brave. Saw many birds throughout our stay including Jays. Great lake near by, medium sized roped-off area for kids to play in the water. The lake / park has a nice grassy area with several tables in the shade, excellent for barbequing. Large (3) parking lots right next to the lake with enough parking if campers keep spaces between cars close, but come early (before 11) just in case. Fishing, walking to the falls (1 hour) and other activities (visit the dam) are close as well. Great staff: friendly and diligent with emptying the...
