Beautiful little urban beach getaway. The water is a little cold but when the thermometer rises, it’s okay! There is ample space to build sand castles, as well as a pop-up branch of the Verdun library in the shaded area by the portable washrooms which loans out books and beach toys for the day (weekends only). It’s an amazing amenity… There is also a small playground to boot!
**The one word of caution is the drink and snack kiosk. There is a $2 deposit for the plastic cups when you order certain beverages and I did not get mine back (paid with cash). My friend also got the run around (paid with credit card) albeit he eventually got it back in cash. I don’t know what the angle was - dishonesty or incompetency - but it left an extremely bad impression and I feel cheated. My advice is to get a receipt, with the deposit written in ink as a separate addition, as proof of payment. (In my case they pulled it out as cash separately, stating the deposit verbally). There's sort of a treed area for some shade, and some new cabans for changing. It's very nice to have this option for the city as most beaches are at least an hour drive from anywhere.
The one real problem is that the swimming is dependent on the water quality and if there's a big rain or storm, the muck at the bottom of the river gets stirred up and they close the swimming for 24 hours. So, call ahead to make sure the water is open if you want to swim. But if you forget to and make your way down only to learn it's closed, there's an outdoor pool just a stone's throw away...
