A truly inspiring and unique experience. This basilica should be on every art lover's bucket list.
Let me start by saying that I'm not a Catholic. I simply don't find the stern and Saturnine aspect of the Catholic church particularly attractive, and I always felt that it had a certain subtle impact on their artistic output. When it comes to this church, that impression couldn't be more wrong.
This building is a living place, absolutely packed to the rafters with exquisite art that expresses love for God, the gift of life, and humanity's spiritual legacy. When you take time to admire the sheer amount of artistry on display here, it's impossible not to respect the devotional energy and loving dedication that was applied to every single detail of this place. Everywhere you look, you'll find thoughtfully arranged works of fine art, whether it be the mosaics, the murals, the engravings and moldings, the various shrines, or the impressively complex interior architecture on display. The basement conceals a beautiful chapel with complex geometries, mosaics in multiple different styles from ancient to contemporary, and charming little mosaic highlights portraying local fauna and flora, and there are gorgeous contemporary paintings in the basement with a subtly psychedelic edge - an uncharacteristic openness to the visual language of modern art, and a breath of fresh air - which form a stunning contrast to the nearby pillar mosaics that are evocative of Muslim or Orthodox geometric art. As beautiful as the main church is, art lovers should absolutely not miss the basement chapel.
Also worth noting are a beautiful shrine to Mary featuring a variety of marbles and stunning copper sun rays, exquisitely detailed copperworks by a local artist on the main doors, the tinted glass on the elevated platform behind the altar (nobody seemed to mind that we ignored the keep-out signs in our quest for more beautiful art, but we should've probably asked for permission lol), the fountain in front of the church and the bas-relief just above the doors - which show interestingly syncretic influences, the amazing and subtly avant-garde line art around the main church's vaulted ceiling, and I could go on for pages. And don't overlook the main church facade, either... it has much denser geometric and symbolic detail than you might expect from the otherwise traditional lines.
I only wish there were a detailed guide which singled out individual art pieces and their history, but until that becomes an option, you'll just have to take it all in at once. Maybe that's intentional, and the air of mystery is meant to be a part of the experience. The priest (who was perfectly bilingual) was kind and welcoming, and very patient with my enthusiastic questioning. The Redemptorists are a truly unique order, and a credit to their religion. Thanks again for a wonderful visit, and we will definitely...

Read moreThis church is extremely beautiful to see, both from outside and inside, with delicate and well-planned sections that are easy to miss.
There are multiple layers of religious depictions. On the outermost layer inside church, Old Testament figures are shown. Then the next layer shows the stations of the cross. Then on the pillars around church are scenes from the life of Christ; the carved details on the pillars are magnificent (see pics)!
Then on the top of church is chronological art of St Anne’s life from her birth (starting from back left when facing altar), circling around the church, ending with death of St Anne (at back right side). Using Google translate helped make sense of what’s written in French :).
The four corner pillars in front of the altar are carvings of the 4 Gospel writers, commonly seen in Catholic and Orthodox churches.
Presented in this way, I interpreted it as showing the OT prophets who prefigured Christ (at outer layer) and Anne who indirectly influenced Christ (at very top), as those who surrounded and played an integral role in Christ’s life (as seen in center and middle of church).
The outside area of the church are also beautiful to walk around; plus, don’t miss the chapels downstairs. Additionally, the golden door on the outside include integrate details of Scripture scenes. Well worth the visit!
The church opened my eyes to a historical figure often overlooked. The mother of Christ, Mary, is who she is due to the influence of her parents, Anne and Joachim. Anne’s background and upbringing of Mary brings to light her influence on the mother Mary.
It’s worth noting that on the top of the altar are three figures in middle, Mary, Christ, and Anne. Those on the side of Christ depicts the immense influence of...
