The Highlights: 1. Easy trails for walking or running 2. Lake for fishing & feeding the ducks 3. Great for kids (easy to supervise) 4. Free Parking 5. Public Restrooms 6. Close to public transit (bus/Skytrain) 7. Close to shopping /dining 8. Activities: Feed ducks, fishing, walking, etc. 9. Quiet 10. Easily accessible (flat terrain, wide paths, free parking and toilets are right next to the entrance, conveniently located) This is nice little gem right in the heart of Surrey (Whalley area). The paths that meander throughout the park are easy enough for a nice, leisurely stroll, but extensive enough to get in some exercise with a run, brisk walk, cartwheels, backflips, or whatever floats your boat. Speaking of boats, it would be a lousy review if I didn't mention, what I personally think is the highlight of the park, the little lake in the middle of it all. In particular, the ducks, geese, various birds, a few beavers, and if you're lucky, you may even meet some turtles poking about. You'll have to keep your eyes open for those little guys though, they're pretty quick 😜! I really love that the Canada Geese there are very friendly and will eat right out of your hand. It's a great place to bring the kids. There is plenty to explore, and it is laid out in such a way that it is easy to keep your eye on the kids while they discover. It's great because you can chill out while they are busy checking out the beaver huts, chasing after those speedy turtles, feeding the various bird species, oh ya, or even fishing! That's right, you can even get in some fishing. In fact, you could have each kid enjoying a different activity at the same time, and still have them all within your line-of-sight. Simultaneously! Another thing that I love about this place is that you are smack dab in the middle of the city's busiest area, but you could just as well be in the middle of nowhere. No exaggeration, I lived a block away for 2 years and had no idea that there was a park there, let alone one with a lake, ducks to feed, turtles to chase, and fish to catch! It is so convenient. Only about a 3 minute drive to Central City Mall (previously named Surrey Central Mall), King George Skytrain Station, Surrey Central Skytrain Station, and tons of shopping/dining/etc. It's an amazing little wormhole to a middle-of-nowhere escape to nature. There are public restrooms, ample (free) parking, and it is easily accessible and enjoyable for pretty much anyone, however 'abled' you happen to be. 😊

Trail Series, Part 22 Wondering if Fall has arrived in Canada? Yep, we’d say that indeed it has! The “Green Timbers Urban Forest Park” located in Surrey (just outside of Vancouver) offers spectacular opportunities to get out and immerse yourself in some “Fall colors” when that need strikes you. Their numerous trails funnel you to (and around) the lake and are extremely well marked and maintained. Bicycles, runners/walkers, and leashed dogs are all welcome. In fact, we felt that most of the trails are flat and wide enough to also welcome wheelchairs and strollers. Although we always recommend the buddy system when enjoying a trail, we found these well traveled enough to give it our highest safety rating. For those seeking a challenge when enjoying these trails, we’d recommend trying to locate the beaver dams and their inhabitants. There is convenient parking located on 100th Avenue (between 144th Street and 148th Street), so get out there and enjoy some fresh and vibrant Canadian air, eh? 🇨🇦 And that’s…Henry’s Take. #canadiantrails

Park Information

Welcome to Green Timbers Urban Forest Park, one of Surrey's largest parks! Green Timbers is home to over 10 kilometres of nature trails, a regularly stocked fishing lake, picnic areas, and the Surrey Nature Centre all nestled in a scenic second-growth forest.

While you explore this urban oasis, keep your eyes and ears open for the many animals who seek refuge here. Common sightings include bald eagles, ducks, salamanders, woodpeckers and native Douglas squirrels.

If you're really lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a barred owl perched silently in a tree!

Green Timbers Lake

Enjoy year-round fishing from the shore. The lake is only for wildlife and fishing: no watercraft, wading, or swimming permitted. Keep dogs on leash and out of the water.

Glacial Erratic

Explore the trails in the northwestern part of the park to find a glacial erratic, a large "wandering rock" that was carried a long distance by glacial ice.

History

Green Timbers Urban Forest Park has transformed greatly since the early 1900s. Once a tourism hotspot for its towering trees, the land was completely logged by 1929. Thankfully, the trees were soon replanted and the site dubbed British Columbia’s “Birthplace of Reforestation". After a long run as a forestry school and nursery, the land officially became a park in 1974.

Much of the park’s success is thanks to the Green Timbers Heritage Society, a group of dedicated community members who have advocated for its protection and stewardship for many years. In 1988 and 1996, their efforts were especially rewarded when Surrey residents voted to designate part of the park as an urban forest: a protected natural legacy to be enjoyed by people and wildlife for...
