As Canadian beaches go this one is pretty nice. Ofcourse it is a man-made sand beach which offers lots of space and gorgeous views of the North and West Vancouver mountains as well as the Vancouver skyline and Stanley Park. It is situated right next to Pacific Spirit Regional Park in UBC so there is as myriad of trails to use if you are more of the hiking type or you want to enjoy the forest before lying on the beach to bask under the sun-or rain...during low tide, one can walk out toward the center of the bay for about 1km, maybe more as the sand bank stretches out quite far. In the summer, eith warmer waters, it is a great place to play with the dogs and kids. Just make sure you read the tide so you have enough time to return safely. The beaches offer great spots for Beach Volleybal and other beach sports. Out of Jericho, countless reggatas pepper the sea with sails. At the very end (west) there is as pretty big leash-free dog park with lots of picnic tables and wide -open grassy areas to play frisbee or ball with your pooch. Further East, Spanish Banks connects with Jericho Beach, making for a nice long walk along the beach if that is what you are into. Dogs are not allowed on the beach on about half of Spanish Banks (the eastern half)and must be on leash the further East you walk. There are three concession stands evenly spaced out between Spanish Banks and Jericho they are closed during winter months but open from spring to fall and offer burgers, hotdogs, onion rings, salads, fish and chips coffee sodas and tons of junk food and ice cream. If you are having a picnic, there are times of the year when coal hibachi and bbqs and re not allowed. They do provide several coal-disposal concrete pipes with grates bur these are closed during periods of extremely hot (for Vancouver) dry weather. One can bring propane stoves and bbqs as long as one uses them only in the designated areas one will be ok. The trail is shared about 2/3 of the time but there areas where it splits. One trail for bikes and one for pedestrians. The beaches have lots of runners and cyclists year-round, especially since the bike trail connects to those exiting UBC and the Pacific Spirit Park. One can ride the bike from UBC along the beach, all the way to Stanley Park by going around the harbours, past the Maritime Museum, Granville Island, Science world, the Plaza of Nations and an English Bay. In the summer one needs to get there early if one wants to get a good spot. The beaches fill up fast.Im the wet spring, fall and winter, be prepared for cold winds and muddy grassy areas. Very muddy. Make sure you bring a towel for everyone, including your pooch. Come prepared, have fun and enjoy this beautiful...
