This 16th century Fort has been largely rebuilt. You can arrive by car or walk up the path from the ruins of the cathedral. Opposite the gate into the Fort is a visitor centre. A guided tour costs 500 escudos per adult. It was built with slave labour between 1587 and 1593, to ward off pirate attacks. Up to 160 solders were stationed here.
