We had an incredible experience at BATUKU restaurant in Cidade Velha. I went with my family and friends, and we absolutely loved everything! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with the perfect balance of elegance and simplicity, creating a comfortable and charming space. The service was flawless, with a team that was attentive and always ensuring everything was perfect.

The food was simply divine! From starters to main courses and desserts, everything was delicious, with beautifully presented dishes and flavors that showcased the best of Cape Verdean cuisine. Every detail reflected the care and dedication of the restaurant.

We were greeted by a very friendly waiter with perfect communication skills (English!) who introduced us to the fresh dishes of the day. You can expect a good selection of freshly caught fish, seafood and meat (such as chicken and beef) for above average but definitely reasonable prices. The service was fast, pleasant, and, most importantly, the food was outstanding and at a more than solid European level — which is rather the exception on Cabo Verde. Both our grilled octopus and grilled beef steak were among the best dishes we had on our whole two-weeks trip on various Cape Verdian islands. After reading the sea of stellar reviews here, my friend and I chose this restaurant as our lunch spot for our visit to Cidade Velha. I'm not sure if we went on a bad day, but the food was not good at all. We both ordered frango grelhado, and it wasn't flavorful, wasn't well prepared and actually tasted a bit off/spoiled. For what we received, I would agree with the review that says this is a bit of a tourist trap— the prices were inflated and the quality didn't match at all. Also, nothing we were served looked as well-plated or attractive as what's seen in photos here.
