This is for a single, very unique Moai located within the Rano Raraku quarry towards the back of the mountain. Most of these reviews do not reflect this. You need a guide to enter this area. Most Moai are made out of compressed volcanic ash, but this one is made from red scoria, which is a more fragile volcanic rock. It's also kneeling, has a more rounded head l, and has a beard, where other Moai are clean shaven and taller. This statues exact history remains a mystery, but it's extremely neat to see so up close and walk around it. It's definitely worth a stop when at the quarry.

This is the location of the stone quarry where the Moai were carved. Nearly half are still at Rano Raraku, the main quarry. Hundreds were transported from there and set on stone platforms around the island facing inward over clan lands. Only one sight has moai facing out to the see, perhaps to honor the original sea explorers who first found this remote and...
