This was every taphophile's paradise! Grand, so majestic as it is beautiful.. with interesting things and information (you can find the map once youre inside). The age, famous people buried, the architecture, the sculptures, tombs and sarcophagi, plus the walls, the avenues (avenidas), the crypts, the fences, the bricks, the drooping roots of big trees and climbing vines and gardens, added the color of the day will give you the most pleasing eerieness, a calming kind of tickles, you know, especially when you are just all by yourself... It was so wide and big that this necropolis had several streets and blocks. I had a limited stay in Santiago in early 2019 yet I was able to come here twice! I was lucky on the first day to see Los Diablos Rojos de V. Jara visiting the cemetery. (take note: taking photos of mausoleum with names are prohibited)

If you love history, this is a must see... beautiful yet unusual mausoleums, sarcophaguses, memorials to most every president of Chile, as well as the common folk... clean, safe, and beautiful. It is a little sad that the damage from past earthquakes has caused some damage and unless something is done, some of the more elaborate mausoleums may collapse in the near future. Although I did see it myself, I recommend you learn the story and find the gravesite of Victor Jara.

Well worth a visit with incredibly interesting architecture & history, not to mention reminders of one's own mortality. Famous, infamous and forgotten figures share this enormous space. Easy to reach by metro, then meander through. Not to be missed are Salvador Allende's tomb or the wall commemorating those killed or "disappeared" during his successors' administration. Patio 29 was the previously secret mass grave used for unmarked burials during Pinochet's government.

This huge cemetery contains the elaborate and ostentatious tombs of the great and wealthy but the memorial "motels" tell a more interesting story.

As well, there is the sad and sobering patio 29 where some of the 40,000 victims of the dictator August Pinochet (in power from 1973 to 1990) were buried.

We entered the cemetery at the entrance next to the administrative offices (corner of La Union and Av Professor Zanartu) where a guard gave us a Spanish language map to the cemetery.

The main entrance is opposite Av La Paz.

The map details the locations of the tombs of presidents and other Chilean notables as well as tombs of architectural distinction.

About halfway through the cemetery the leafy areas of "uptown" give way to the low rise motel-style mausoleums of the ordinary people.

Patio 29 is an unloved looking area of metal crosses that contrasts with the obvious care and attention lavished on the neighbouring motel graves.

While visiting, we saw a coffin on a hand-drawn cart followed by mourners and many people tending graves. Dogs roam happily but show little interest in humans.

There are more than 2 million bodies in the cemetery, most of which are in the above-ground multistorey buildings.

Well...
