This is a brilliant place to visit. They bring you here on fishing boats from next to Restaurant Chiringuito in Zapallar, where you can have lunch afterward. While you cannot actually land on the island, you can get quite close and get great pictures of the penguins. It took a while to get there, but the captain then went back and forth near the island and we sat for a while taking pictures. It took about half hour each way and about 40 minutes at the island. The trip on the fishing boat is also great fun, I think kids would love doing this. I was really glad we did it on the boat. The other option is to go to Playa Los Coirones and go up on to the hill path, but from here you need binoculars and/or a good camera to see the penguins. The penguins look just like the ones on Boulders beach in South Africa, they are quite small Humboldt and Magellanic penguins. There were hundreds of them and its cool to see how they live. Definitely worth a visit.

So amazing to see wild penguins! Pay only $5 to park at the beach nearby and walk to see the island.

I understand that the penguins are not always there due to migration patterns. We went in late December 2011 and saw hundreds, maybe thousands, of penguins.

We hired a fishing boat to take us around the island (you cannot go onto the island as it and the penguins are protected). We got close enough to get amazing photos (from the boat) of penguins and birds. We hired a fishing boat from Zapallar to the island and back. I recall it took about 40 minutes each way and about 1 hour taking photos. It was an...
