圣亚海洋世界 — Attraction in Dalian City

Forced labour, endless torture, life imprisonment……This is not Oswiecim, but the popular Sun Asia Ocean World in the beautiful coastal city of Dalian, China. While dolphin, porpoise and whale keeping and shows are increasingly being restricted and banned in most of the developed world, China has shown a growing interest in importing those sea mammals to the aquariums. The aquarium has basically no nature education to the public, and dolphin and walrus shows are just for fun—not a single word about their habitat or natural habits is mentioned. Polar bears, seals and sea lions in extremely cramped conditions all show repetitive and compulsive behaviours, deprived of their rights to see a ray of sunlight in their lifetimes. Interestingly, the park’s reviews from Chinese visitors are overwhelmingly positive, while those from foreign tourists are primarily negative, because there is limited awareness in China that animals in zoos and aquariums are for conservation and education, not for generating money and for fun. Children tap on the glass and adults use flash to take pictures, and the nearby staff do nothing about it—they work just for receiving money for animal feeding. Every ‘star’ animal is a cash cow for the stakeholders, but their living conditions have not been improved by an inch—exactly as what I saw 25 years ago. Horrible place! The purpose of this aquarium is 100% profit and 0% scientifical nor educational. Animals are kept in horrible conditions. Too many sharks in one tank with no space to move, heavily injured sharks because they fight with eachother. In the big tank with the tunnel I saw 3 turtles that were obviously dead (i am assuming because they were stuck in some corner, without moving, with white eyes and pale skin colour). These are protected animals threatened from extinction!!! Don't go there! There are plenty of other aquariums that have an educational/scientifical mission and are very entertaining to visit. How could you let a gorgeous seal die in your tank? If you’re going to enslave such a gorgeous creature you could at least make sure it’s concrete “home” is safe. It never should have been held captive in the first place. This facility is a tragedy....
