One of the interesting places to discover in Cheung Chau Island is the Cheung Po Tsai Cave. This was where the notorious early 19th-century pirate Cheung Po Tsai stashed his loot during a decade of terrorising the waters around Hong Kong. You can find the Cheung Po Tsai Cave in the southwest corner of Cheung Chau along the Cheung Chau Family Walk Trail. If taking the trail from north to south, you will encounter it a few hours into your hike shortly after passing the Reclining Rock and boulder beach area. A more direct route is to start your hike going south from the main ferry. You'll arrive at the cave in around 20-30 minutes. An even faster approach is to use the local junk boat ferries (HK$10) from the small pier south of the main ferry pier along Pak She Praya for a 5 minute journey to the San Wan Pier. The cave is no more than a 5-6 minute walk from the Sai Wan Pier and the path is well marked. You'll find two different information panels along the way. The better one is the large green sign by the Hong Kong Board of Tourism. Here you can learn more about the infamous pirate before following the path down to the famous cave. At the cave, you have to slip down into a hole. Once inside it is rather dark so best to have a torch if you want to see anything. There are a few footholds to help you make way inside. However, most simply have a peak down, take a pic or two and then make way out. Note that the passage leading directly to the cave is well paved but can be very crowded at times as this is a rather popular spot to find on Cheung Chau.

Fun experience with my sisters and 78 year old aunt! She is very skinny and adventurous. We were very careful and went slowly down the ladder to enter the cave. We were very lucky that we had the cave to ourselves and spent some time inside taking photos, haha! If you just go straight down into the cave and walk through it, it doesn't take more than a few minutes. But if you're like my family, and like to take many photos, then you'll spend a good 10-15 minutes down inside the cave. The view outside the cave is gorgeous.

Super cool experience, definitely something that you need to checkout if you make your way out to Cheung Chau Island. Lots to see and read and the hike over, lots of history and lots to learn about. My suggestion is to bring a long some sort of flashlight or something. Cave is tight. Peak summer months, stay hydrated. Always beware of the giant asian hornets/wasps with the orange head, those are insane.

Certainly dark, bring a flashlight or phone! A little tricky going down as the first person in the dark. There was a ladder set up to help. After crawling down through the entrance and down the ladder, the cabe goes on for 20m or so before reaching a narrow exit. You can squeeze through and up another small ladder, coming out on some rocks near the path to the cave. While short, the experience felt adventurous and the fact that you could go through and come out (rather than needing to just turn around) was nice. My kids (3 and 5) were helped down and up at the entrance and exit, but they thought the whole thing was pretty cool as long as they...

Definitely more intense that initially imagined, and does require a small hike to get to it, which parts of it get pretty steep. Definitely will need to use a flashlight, and taller people may have sent trouble going through some shorter spots of the cave. There's one point that is really skinny that only one person can walk through at a time, and some people may need to approach it sideways. There are also some steep spots that have ladders. It's nice that the people before us were nice enough to give us some light, or not it may have been hard to go down the ladder at the beginning. Small, but definitely...
