This is a 3,000 hectare area of protected wild country that was designated as a country park in 1978. It is sandwiched between the Sai Kung East Country Park and the Ma On Shan Country Park in the New Territories East section of Hong Kong.
The country park encompasses a handful of old remote villages, thick forested areas as well as peaks with nice views of the harbour and surrounding countryside. There are nice bays with good beaches at Hoi Ha Wan as well as delightful stretches of beach at Lai Chi Chong where you can view rare geology as part of the UNESCO Global Geopark.
Visitors can enjoy a patchwork of well maintained trails that transect the Sai Kung West Country Park. Most notably, the MacLehose Trail Section 3 along with other very good hikes such as the Cheung Sheung Country Trail, Tai Tan Country Trail and the Lai Chi Chong Trail.
Transportation into the Sai Kung West Country Park is best arranged by taxi or public buses to/from the Sai Kung Village including useful route 7 (Sai Kung Hoi Ha), route 9 (Sai Kung Lady MacLehose Village) and route 94 (Sai Kung Wong Shek Pier). Do a bit of research before setting off to know which route works for you based on needed drop off/pick up points within the country park.
Note: It is also worth having a Hong Kong taxi app installed on your mobile phone as well. If you end your hike in the afternoon, particularly on weekends, you will often find long queues of other hikers trying to get back to Sai Kung town by way of the limited bus routes. Full buses and long waits are quite common on weekends so it can be very helpful to be able to to call in a taxi at the end...
