Grand Mercure Baolong Hotel Shanghai — Attraction in Shanghai

We stayed here for two nights as part of our China tour. It was a really nice hotel in a convenient location. Everything was great till the day we were leaving. We asked if we could get stamps to mail two postcards home to the U.S. , and were told they didn’t have stamps. We asked where we could buy some and got directions. We took off to find them (walking distance), and stopped after a bit when we couldn’t find the P.O. Three college-aged Chinese students gave us directions, and we were finally able to find it. ||The “trap” was a small box in the desk in our room. Inside it had one condom, with kind of cool Chinese writing on it. A friend and I thought it was pretty funny, and she suggested taking it home, so we both did. I looked at the lengthy list of items they charge for, and it was NOT on it. However, we were each charged about $3 U.S. I would NOT have taken it if I had known that. While it wasn’t much,it felt a lot like they planned for it. They made us wait till they went up to the room to check it. They were very quick, as though they knew exactly what to check. We stayed here with RSD on our china tour. Like most of the hotels we stayed in it was oppulent and very large. Unfortunately we didn't have time to use the pool or other facilities but if you do, take a swimming cap as they are obligatory (for sale in the shop) Breakfast was a large buffet with European and Chinese food and had a good choice of breads, cheeses and continental as well as the usual cooked eggs etc. Dinner became very repetitive as every hotel seemed to serve exactly the same banquet of dishes on a lazy Susan. Comfortable for the type of visit, although the rooms are overheated. Not a fan of the current hotel design obsession for putting large clear windows between the bathroom and bedroom. I am an American who stayed here for 14 nights for business. The stay was excellent, staff knew enough English that I always had what I needed. Housekeeping came everyday to clean my room and did a superb job. I had my laundry done at the hotel for a charge since it was such a long stay, and they did an amazing job! They returned all clothing in sealed bags and all items were wrinkle free. The rooms are older but still clean and well-kept with no problems to speak of.They do keep the AC off during the day but they were quick to bring me a large tower fan to help with this.
