If you're a new visitor, on a cruise, or simply a bored ex-pat in Cartagena, and never been, the Convent of Santa Cruz de La Popa, is an unmissable gem that deserves a top spot on your itinerary.
Not only is it the highest point in all of Cartagena, but it also offers breathtaking natural vistas and a deep dive into local history and legend. I say go visit! It was lovely!
Legend has it that the convent was founded by Fray Alonso Paredes, an Augustinian monk who, while fasting in the desert, dreamed that the Virgin Mary instructed him to build a monastery at the tallest point in Cartagena. Upon arrival, he discovered a pagan shrine dedicated to a black goat named Busiraco. Fray Paredes cast the icon from the top of La Popa and replaced it with the image of the Virgin de la Candelaria, which stands there to this day.
Getting to La Popa is straightforward and affordable via Uber or taxi. However, be forewarned: arranging a return trip can be tricky due to poor cell reception, especially if you have a USA provider. Ensure you plan your return journey ahead of time to avoid any inconvenience.
The convent, still active today, provides a serene atmosphere and offers the most incredible 360-degree views of Cartagena, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts. The tranquility and beauty of the site can be fully appreciated in under an hour and a half, making it a short yet enriching visit.
While there is a cafeteria on-site, it’s advisable to come prepared with plenty of water or electrolytes, as Cartagena’s humidity can be quite overwhelming, especially for those not used to it.
In summary, the Convent of Santa Cruz de La Popa is a must-see. Its historical significance, stunning views, and peaceful ambiance make it a highlight of any trip to Cartagena. Don’t miss this superb destination, but remember to plan your exit strategy to ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit.
I’d do this again with friends. So...
Read moreConvent Ticket is 13K COP cash only. They officially close at 17:30, tickets sales, but is possible to stay a bit longer outside to enjoy the view, I stayed till 18:15.
Don't go back walking, is not safe, especially after getting dark, Uber is around 21K COP from there to Cartagena Walls just as reference.
Inside is fine but honestly I was more into the view which is definitely worth it. You'll have a 360 of Cartagena, probably the best view of the town. It's a just visit place!
I recommend to get there around 16:30~17:00 and stay till sunset if you can. I took Uber from the Caribe Plaza Mall till there and it was 19K COP.
No need to hire taxi or pay for someone to wait for you, there are always taxis up there if you want.
I visited in July 2023, 35c and 80% humidity, yeah...
Read moreVery nice views, interesting convent, but quite expensive.
Entrance is 14,000 COP and to get there you need to take uber. It cost us 27,000 COP. On top the driver offered to wait for us and take us back to the centre for 50,000 COP. As internet isn't working well there, we couldn't order another Uber and as the descent is quite unsafe we decided to accept it.
The visit turned out to be 105,000 COP for two persons which is quite overpriced. But it's a nice change from the city centre.
Be aware of the vendors outside the place. They can be quite insistent. Tell them "no gracias" and walk on.
There are guides inside who offer paid tours. We didn't take them, but overheard some guides during our visit. It really didn't seem worth it.
All cash. They don't...
