Parque Natural Cerro El Volador — Attraction in Medellín

I felt obligated to write a review because I felt very uncomfortable after my experience, and reading the reviews here, I guess I got off easy. I went alone on a Monday afternoon and there was no one there, except a few sketchy looking folks sitting at the foot of the stairs. I went to buy water at a nearby shop and asked if that’s the hike. They said yes, but warned me I could get robbed. Then, they said if I go fast and don’t turn right I’ll be fine and just go for ten minutes and back, and to put my phone in my waistband.

I went all way up and didn’t turn right where the path split. I came up to the road and had to decide where to go again, and saw a lady walking from the left. I asked for directions and she said I should go left but she said it’s better if she comes with because it’s dangerous to go alone.

She was very nice, and trusting, but she told me of all of the things that happen in that park when you go alone on a week day when no one is there and it made me worry the whole time. I wasn’t sure if I had met a crazy person, but it seems like she was just being honest.

FOR YOU TOURISTS- RECOMMENDATIONS: It is better to go up on SUNDAY, (the safest and most recommended day to go) which is the busiest day, there are many people doing sports, walking their dogs, or having a picnic. Take a taxi to take you along the main road and leave you at the top in the second parking lot (more explained to where they allow cars and motorcycles to get on) at this point you walk 10 more minutes to the top. On Sundays there are guides and police Walk along the main street and DO NOT take the alternate paths. Leave El Volador Park along the same main access road where you can easily take a taxi. Cerro el Volante is a fantastic place, there you can see the city in its 360° degrees and take some incredible photos. There are native trees, special plants for butterflies and bees, and you can breathe purer and cleaner air than the rest of the city. Many of us go up there with our dogs. Bring water, sunscreen, comfortable clothing, and food if you prefer.

PARA USTEDES TURISTAS- RECOMENDACIONES:

Es mejor subir DOMINGO, (el dia mas seguro y recomendado para ir) que es el día mas concurrido, hay muchas personas haciendo deporte, paseando sus perros, o de picnick. Tome un taxi que lo lleve por la via principal y que lo deje arriba en el segundo parqueadero (más explicado hasta donde dejan subir carros y motos) en este punto subes 10 minutos más caminando hasta arriba. Los domingos hay guías y policías Camine por la calle principal y NO tome los senderos alternos. Abandone el parque el Volador por la misma vía principal de acceso donde podrá tomar un taxi con facilidad. El cerro el volador es un lugar fantastico, alli podras ver la ciudad en sus 360° grados y hacer unas fotos increibles. alli hay arboles nativos, plantas especiales para mariposas y abejas, y se respira un aire mas puro y limpio del resto de la ciudad. Muchos paisas subimos alli con nuestros perros. llevar agua, bloqueador solar, ropa comoda, y comida...
