Easy hike down to pools/short waterfall area from the highway. The water is NOT HOT, it is warm, but it still feels good and the setting is beautiful in the forest just off the highway. The water is about as hot as the water at the private spas that advertise hot springs. You may have to pay 5000 colones to a guy “manning” the parking lot, not sure if he is part of a legitimate operation. But it was cheap and he did help us back out of the road side parking space. There was also a Security guard along the highway on the path to the falls trail that didn’t seem to be doing much of anything. The hike down to the access point is short but there are some big steps down (natural steps like roots and rocks). Flip flops might be tough for the hike but it is so short that it probably wouldn’t matter. There is a shore to put your stuff and areas where you can sit in the water up to your neck and even float in the water or sit directly in front of water pouring over rocks for a natural massage. Read morePLEASE READ! This is a FREE access point for the hot springs. It can be a little overwhelming for parking. There are men with safety vest on who will guide you into a parking space which is just the side of the road. The best do not mean anything they don’t work for anything/ anyone. Once you park they will tell you it is $10 to park that is false. They will then tell you to pay or something will happen to your car. This is also false. We parked and stayed for 2 hours and came back to our normal car. You do not have to pay to park. Just ignore them. Bring some snacks and a few drinks and just chill and enjoy the warm water.
Gets slightly hotter the further up you go but not massively hot.
Bring a waterproof torch if you plan to be there near sunset as there are no lights and it can be treacherous walking back.
Bring a drybag to keep your stuff dry and safe. Keep an eye out for racoons as we saw one trying to steal...
