Great small beach and very clean. Caught some decent fish right off the rocks. Bring a headlamp and fish topwaters at night for Trevalla, cuberas (huge ones - local caught a 50kg one for reference), roosters and others. If you walk out to the left farthest rock then you are into bluewater species. Dorado, tuna, and possibly wahoo! I had best success at night with poppers , colors down there the locals like are generally WHITE. White poppers at night, spoons, big spoons, and diving lures during the day. The bait you are trying to mimic are flying fish and bonita and mackerel 6-10 inches long.
For rods, I used Okuma 10ft 4 piece travel Medium Heavy on Penn Battle II 6000 with 65# braid. I also suggest bringing a smaller lighter rod, I had an inshore okuma 7ft travel rod on a battle II 4000 with 30# braid. The lighter rod is nice to switch to after chunking and working heavy poppers for 3 days in a row.
Check the tides because if you walk out to that left furthest point it is possible to get rimrocked or have a tough armpit deep wade back over lava rock and crashing waves. Also suggest some GOOD closed toe sandals or shoes like keen or merrell for walking the rocks down there. Some of the rocks are slippery and some are not. You will quickly learn where to and where not to step by the color of the rock and what is growing on it.
All of the locals fish on the left side. If you go on the right side and try to make it to that point you will have to cross (swim) a deep gap. I checked it out but nothing that you can cross with gear. It's nice to check out if you want to go exploring but would be very difficult with rods in hand.
Bring more gear than you expect, I gave a bunch away to the locals and they really appreciated it and also gave me some good tips which saved quite a bit of time figuring things out. Gear down there is very expensive and hard to get. If you go trolling in the bay bring some rapala magnum divers . white and red. I brought a 9 inch halco for trolling and it got hit and broke the line. You would really make their day if you gave them a couple of brand new rapalas for sure.
Check the tidepools out at night with headlamp as well, some really cool creatures come out that you do not see...

Read moreThis review is about the activities & people of the “companies” of Ocotal beach. DONT EVER GIVE A DEPOSIT for boat rides or jet skis, you will never see that person again. Andres Canales Sanchez (hangs in Hermosa with a guy named Albany) showed us a great day on a boat, then took a deposit for jet skis the next day and kept that money and didn’t show. Very unfortunate way to do business. If you want a sport activity, ask at the kayak place near Father Rooster. They have a storefront so they can’t take off with your money. They...
