El Mejunje — Attraction in Santa Clara

I saw some interesting things in my life. And one of them was watching a drag queen performing next to Fidel Castro and Che Guevara photos!

This is a great place where you can meet interesting people; but it's not for everybody. It is artistic but not pretentious; good live music and theatre without being exclusive; open to all ages and all peoples....as any art venue should be! (Just a small disclaimer: Exercise the normal caution because you will also meet some of those who want to trick you in touristic traps).

Santa Clara is not a touristic city, but it has the 2nd biggest university in the country. This makes it young city by excellence. This young generation needs places of manifestation to express their ideas and feelings. And then come El Mejunje

'Mejunje' or "the brew" is one of the few places where i felt Cubans feel free and able to express themselves(within limits of course). The place is divided into the cultural center, where there is always an event happening(a theatre play or film screening). And then there is the bar/club, which host a daily drag queen show(believe it or not!) and occasionally live hard rock/metal/alternative music. The place also works on campaigns to raise awareness about LGBT community rights and STDs among locals.

I am pretty sure the director is well-connected, because LGBT rights and (relative) freedom of expression is such a sensitive topic in the country.

So to cut a long story short, absolutely worth an evening when in town, be sure to try to time your visit with a big band playing loud and lively. Grab a drink from one of the three bars, then strike up a conversation or just dance with one of the locals or...

Nos recomendaron este sitio y de la que veníamos con nuestro coche de alquiler desde los cayos hasta la Habana paramos a tomar un cafe y verlo. Todo empezó raro cuando al pedir un cafe no venia y no venia, los camareros (uno alto con gorra y otra chica con trenzas) estas como nerviosos venga a dar vueltas al rededor de nosotros y tras 15 minutos esperando por el cafe, decidimos irnos. La respuesta de los camareros fue la siguiente, oye amigo no te vayas, que el cafe viene ya, vamos al otro lado que ahi te ponemos el café, cuando llegue a la puerta había dos chicos que no nos dejaron salir a la primera. Cuando pudimos salir fuimos hasta el coche y cual fue la sorpresa teníamos una rueda desinflada. Me puse a cambiar la rueda y por arte de magia apareció un ángel de la guardia (hombre con gorra, pendientes de aros dorados y bicicleta) que sin pedírselo nos cambio la rueda pinchada, yo le dije que no que no, que gracias pero el insistió y que nos iba a llevar a un taller a arreglar la rueda. Pues nada le seguimos con la bici y tras ver que el primer taller estaba cerrado nos quiso llevar a otro mas fuera del pueblo, el mientras con la bici llamando por teléfono como muy apurado. Ya me canse y me di media vuelta porque ya no me fiaba. Resultado de todo esto, el muy impresentable me había quitado el obús desinflando la rueda al instante, cuando te llevan al taller que no existe te piden dinero por la pieza o vete tu a saber lo que hubiera pasada. Lo del obús lo se porque cuando llegue a la siguiente gasolinera unos cubanos muy amables me encontraron un obus de repuesto y me inflaron la rueda. Conclusión, lo del bar ves que aparcas con un coche de alquiler, mandan a uno que te quite el obus, el cafe que no llega y mientras hacen tiempo, cuando sales el te ayuda y luego te timan, así que, nunca nunca vayáis a este bar porque con todos los turistas que hablamos nos contaron su estafa con este...

Preferate place in Santa Clara, every day have different show. There is 2 bars, one on bottom floor with plastic cup, second on second floor and more private.
