It could have been one of the greatest tourist attractions in Cyprus! The site of the ancient city of Amathus, a place rich in history, myths and mystery! There are several remains of the now vanished city dating from various chronological periods, including the Roman Agora, the Christian Basilica, parts of the city walls, and the Acropolis at the top of the hill. Unfortunately, considerable background reading is necessary before someone visits this magnificent site as it is not visitor-friendly in terms of visual and narrative aids. It is really a shame, because the history of the place is quite unique. Irrespective, you should definitely visit the Acropolis (it is free!), where you can see the copy of a gigantic stone vessel, similar to the one stolen and now exhibited in Louvre. While walking up the hill, you will be able to take some magnificent photo shots of the city walls with the Mediterranean Sea in the background (check my...

Not as extensive as some sites such as Kourion, but still Impressive, and like most classical sites in Cyprus, make sure you've got your walking boots on.

Good number of boards describing the history of the city of Amathus, and plenty of room for kids to run. Though be warned there is very little shade save for one small tree with a well placed bench underneath. So take a hat and plenty of sun screen.

The entire remains of Amathus are fairly widely distributed around the area, and go far wider than the site of the Agora and water-system in the fenced area beyond the ticket -office. There are other extensive ruins on the walk up to the ancient Acropolis on the low hill overlooking the lower city. Access is via the pathway to the left of the site entrance opposite the car-park and does not require a ticket to access.

Also don't miss a visit to the Archaeological Museum in Limassol, where a large number of finds from Amathus...

Enjoyed this ancient site a lot because I knew nothing about it before visiting and I learned loads from the informative boards at the entrance about the history. The ruins themselves are very impressive, especially the nyphareum and the baths. You can freely walk around most of the old houses and the forum itself for great close up views. Entrance fee of 2.50 euros is a bargain and if you're a senior, it's even better. Best of all, we were all alone at the site for most of our visit, so we really had a chance to visualize it as it might once have been.

This ancient site is under the care of Cyprus Antiquities. Entrance is €2.50 per adult. There is a water tap at the entrance. Loos are also available. The lower site is wheelchair accessible with care although the paths are stony. A number 30 bus stops near here at the nearby St Barnabus chapel. You can walk back along the promenade and under the road to reach the site. The site extends to the top of the hill where there are some fine stone ruins. Do be careful of deep pits on the slope up to the hilltop.

An interesting historical site to visit- Nice to see, but difficult to understand. Would have been nice to have signage with history information of the ruins at various spots around the site. Try to book a guided tour if you can find one. The ticket office should be more informed about available tours/ guides - but had no information which was disappointing. We visited the site around 3pm in April when the sun wasn't as harsh which was perfect to walk around and explore the ruins comfortably.
