Big, Fat Cockroaches. The size and selection of animals was very nice. We had a wonderful time....until we noticed the exotic Asian plants and a horrifyingly familiar smell (a smell that can also trigger asthma attacks). We looked up at the ceiling and realized that the whole place was infested with the Asian variety of cockroaches- yes - the fat ones that fly in hot temperatures and eat their own dead if you smash one. The staff said there were too many to eradicate, and that they’ve learnt to live with them. Now, this is a grave concern for us, because cockroaches may not be venomous, but they are dirty, disgusting and they spread disease. When SARS (the viral epidemic) basically shut down Hong Kong years ago, it was discovered that roaches were largely responsible for spreading it fast. In Asia, roaches spread diseases like hepatitis. Roaches are persistent indoor survivalists and can spread to neighbouring towns. They love humidity and lay eggs everywhere. Sanitation authorities should inspect the place up and down and kill all the roaches. Also, the place should be inspected for importing plants with soil because invasive species come from this and can disrupt the local ecosystem. Surely, soil in the plants from the tropics would have easily transported cockroaches or roach eggs that hatched after a while. Plants are supposed to be transported from country to country in a liquid medium, instead of soil. We were quite upset about this cockroach discovery and had to leave early. To the management, please do something about this. You are solely accountable for this...
Read more2 hours can easily be spent here, but if you are not intrigued by reptiles and/or amphibians, this is not your ideal location. Having said that the representation of various turtle, tortoise, frog, lizard and snake species is extensive. There are a few mammals, birds and fish too. Overall, the animals are kept well and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. There are several activities during the day, like feeding and presentation of some animals. The place is in constant development so there can be occasional closed off areas or empty exhibits. Just to name a few flagship species inland taipan, komodo dragon, king cobra, philippine crocodile or the gila monster are all famous in the...
Read moreWe were very lucky to get like a little private show of the naked mole-rats by one of the keepers. He put some tissue paper and soil into one of their tunnels and as they went to work right away, he told and showed us what they were doing, how their complex social structures work, and much more. I can completely unironically say that they are very interesting animals! The keeper was a very nice guy and so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about these animals. A delightful...
